3D simulation of lower-hybrid drift waves in strong guide field asymmetric reconnection in laboratory experiments

J. Ng et al.

Summary: The recent magnetic reconnection experiment observed short wavelength lower-hybrid waves near the electron diffusion region in strong guide field reconnection. A three-dimensional fully kinetic simulation is performed based on plasma parameters from the experiment to investigate the generation and effects of the lower-hybrid waves on the reconnection process. It is found that the low-beta regions around the reconnection site are unstable to the lower-hybrid drift instability, which is driven by the difference between the electron and ion outflows. These waves modify the electron distributions, causing periodic opening and closing of gaps in electron velocity space and contributing to the anomalous resistivity. The simulation results are discussed in the context of space observations and laboratory experiments.

Parallel Electron Heating through Landau Resonance with Lower Hybrid Waves at the Edge of Reconnection Ion Jets

Yong Ren et al.

Summary: We investigate lower hybrid waves in magnetic reconnection at the flank magnetopause using Magnetospheric Multiscale data. Our observations show intense emissions of lower hybrid waves at the density boundary of the reconnection ion jet, along with heating signatures in electrons parallel to the magnetic field. We find that the electron fluxes parallel to the magnetic field exhibit oscillations at the same frequency as the lower hybrid waves near the Landau resonance energy, and are in phase or antiphase with the wave parallel electric field. These observations provide direct evidence for Landau resonance and suggest a role for wave-particle interactions in the energy conversion chain of reconnection ion jets.

Direct observations of anomalous resistivity and diffusion in collisionless plasma

D. B. Graham et al.

Summary: The waves contribute to anomalous diffusion but do not contribute to the reconnection electric field. However, they do produce an anomalous electron drift and diffusion across the current layer associated with magnetic reconnection, which modifies the reconnection process.

Simultaneous macroscale and microscale wave-ion interaction in near-earth space plasmas

Z-Y Liu et al.

Summary: Identifying the energy transfer from macroscales to microscales in collisionless plasmas is crucial for astrophysics and space physics. Two cross-scale energy-transfer events observed in Earth's magnetosphere demonstrate the efficiency and timescale of this process, where hot ions interact with ultra-low-frequency waves and electromagnetic-ion-cyclotron waves.

Whistler Waves Associated With Electron Beams in Magnetopause Reconnection Diffusion Regions

Shan Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the role of electron beams in whistler wave excitation through the analysis of MMS crossing data. Two types of whistler waves are identified, with the difference mainly attributed to the anisotropy of the background population. The study suggests that the first type is mainly caused by background anisotropy, with the beam contributing to enhanced wave growth through cyclotron resonance. The second type is excited through Landau resonance, with the beam anisotropy inducing additional cyclotron modes.

Nonlinear Landau Resonant Interaction Between Kinetic Alfven Waves and Thermal Electrons: Excitation of Time Domain Structures

Xin An et al.

Summary: This study shows that TDSs can be triggered by electrons in nonlinear Landau resonance with kinetic Alfven waves. These electrons are trapped by the parallel electric field of kinetic Alfven waves, creating localized beam distributions and generating TDSs through beam instabilities. The larger picture reveals a cascade of ion flow energy dissipation from large to small scales in the Earth's inner magnetosphere, with kinetic Alfven waves acting as intermediaries.

Lower-hybrid drift waves and their interaction with plasmas in a 3D symmetric reconnection simulation with zero guide field

Shan Wang et al.

Summary: In symmetric magnetic reconnection with zero guide field, lower-hybrid drift waves (LHDW) develop into long-wavelength modes and short-wavelength modes, forming electron vortices in the bifurcated electron current layer and downstream in the separatrix region. Electrons are heated within the vortices, while the drift and deceleration of ions lead to changes in temperature. Additionally, parallel electric fields are a combination of the LHDW wave field and whistler waves.
