Influence of the asthenosphere on earth dynamics and evolution

Lawrence Cathles et al.

Summary: The existence of a thin, weak asthenospheric layer beneath Earth's lithospheric plates is supported by various geological and geophysical studies. This layer is essential for the plate tectonic style of convection found on Earth and may be related to partial melting and the presence of water in the sub-lithospheric mantle. The long-term evolution of the Earth is likely controlled by thermal regulation and volatile recycling that maintain a geotherm approaching the wet mantle solidus at asthenospheric depths.

Time-varying uplift in Svalbard-an effect of glacial changes

Halfdan Pascal Kierulf et al.

Summary: In this study, we analyzed GNSS data from Svalbard to understand the uplift rates controlled by the elastic and viscoelastic response of the solid Earth to glacier mass changes. The results showed significant temporal variations in uplift rates and a recent increase attributed to climate change-related ice mass loss. We also demonstrated the use of residual uplift signal to study other geophysical signals. The findings highlight the need for new viscoelastic modeling of the glacial isostatic adjustment process in Svalbard.

Transient ice loss in the Patagonia Icefields during the 2015-2016 El Nino event

Demian D. Gomez et al.

Summary: The Patagonia Icefields are the largest non-polar ice masses in the southern hemisphere. The response of these icefields to climate drivers such as El Nino-Southern Oscillation is not well understood. Using GPS data and elastic response of the earth, researchers estimated that during the strong El Nino event in 2015, the northern icefield lost around 28 Gt of mass while the southern icefield lost around 12 Gt, making it the largest ice loss event observed in the Patagonia Icefields using geodetic data.

WINTERC-G: mapping the upper mantle thermochemical heterogeneity from coupled geophysical-petrological inversion of seismic waveforms, heat flow, surface elevation and gravity satellite data

J. Fullea et al.

Summary: The new global thermochemical model WINTERC-G integrates various geophysical data to accurately constrain the lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary, thermal and compositional anomalies in the mantle, providing a high-resolution global image of temperature, composition, and density distributions. Furthermore, the model results show that the composition, temperature, and density of the oceanic mantle lithosphere are related to the spreading rate, with significant regional differences observed.
