Crustal and uppermost mantle structure beneath Tristan da Cunha using surface wave phase velocity from horizontal components OBS ambient seismic noise

Summary: In this study, ambient noise tomography was used to investigate the crust and uppermost mantle shear velocity structure in the Tristan da Cunha region in the South Atlantic. The results reveal a shallow conduit of low shear velocity beneath the volcanic archipelago, possibly representing a magmatic plumbing system. Additionally, indications of low shear velocities were observed in the uppermost mantle beneath seamounts in the southwest of the island.

Self-organization of magma supply controls crustal thickness variation and tectonic pattern along melt-poor mid-ocean ridges

Summary: Variations in mantle sources and magmatic processes lead to significant changes in the crustal thickness and spreading pattern at mid-ocean ridges. Fast ridges have relatively uniform crustal thickness distributions, while slow and ultraslow ridges exhibit large lateral fluctuations and exhumation of mantle rocks. The spreading pattern changes from symmetric configuration to highly asymmetric plates accretion at slow ridges. This study uses numerical models to investigate the impact of mantle potential temperature and spreading rate on crustal thickness variations and tectonic patterns. The results show that the self-organization of magma supply, controlled by spreading rate and mantle potential temperature, plays a critical role in shaping the tectonic and crustal patterns of mid-ocean ridges.

Seismic evidence for uniform crustal accretion along slow-spreading ridges in the equatorial Atlantic Ocean

Summary: Using wide-angle seismic data from the equatorial Atlantic Ocean, this study shows that the crustal thickness is nearly uniform across five crustal segments formed at the slow-spreading Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The crust is predominantly of magmatic origin, likely due to a two-dimensional sheet-like mantle upwelling facilitated by long-offset transform faults and a high concentration of volatiles in the mantle.

The submarine Azores Plateau: Evidence for a waning mantle plume?
