Activity characteristics and enlightenment of the debris flow triggered by the rainstorm on 20 August 2019 in Wenchuan County, China

Jiang Xiong et al.

Summary: The article analyzes a catastrophic debris flow event triggered by heavy rainfall in Wenchuan County, China on August 20, 2019, and further discusses the long-term trend of debris flow in the county. The analysis shows that while debris flow activity is decreasing in Wenchuan County, it will still take more than 5 to 10 years to recover to pre-earthquake levels.

Quantitative assessment of physical fragility of buildings to the debris flow on 20 August 2019 in the Cutou gully, Wenchuan, southwestern China

Ming Chen et al.

Summary: This study proposes a quantitative method to assess the physical fragility of buildings to debris flows in the Wenchuan earthquake-affected areas by analyzing debris flow activity and building damage features. Physical fragility curves for different building structures are proposed based on the probability of exceeding different damage states corresponding to different intensities of debris flows. Using the proposed physical fragility functions, the structural resistance of buildings to debris flows in the affected region can be assessed, providing a scientific basis for risk management and mitigation strategies.

Activity evolution of landslides and debris flows after the Wenchuan earthquake in the Qipan catchment, Southwest China

Shi Qing-yun et al.

Summary: The Wenchuan earthquake triggered a series of landslides and debris flows in the affected area. The immediate aftermath saw a sharp increase in active landslides, which then decreased over time, while the total area of landslides continued to grow. Vegetation coverage gradually increased post-earthquake, approaching pre-earthquake levels by 2019, with landslide activity high initially but slowing over time. Predictions suggest that landslide activities and vegetation recovery rates will return to pre-earthquake levels within approximately two decades, while debris flow activities are expected to last for an additional 50 years or more.

Long-term changes in the landslide sediment supply capacity for debris flow occurrence in Wenchuan County, China

Jiang Xiong et al.

Summary: The study showed that the capacity of the landslide sediment supply for channels in debris flow basins generally decreased from 2008 to 2018, but may gradually diminish in an unstable way due to heavy rainfall. The long-term evolution of landslides plays a key role in influencing the sediment supply capacity of landslides in the study area. Higher debris flow activity may last longer as there is still sufficient material accumulated in the channels.
