Dynamics of Cambro-Ordovician rifting of the northern margin of Gondwana as revealed by the timing of subsidence and magmatism in rift-related basins

Jiri Zak et al.

Summary: The Bohemian Massif in Central Europe formed from lithospheric fragments at the northern margin of Gondwana. The key geodynamic process that shaped this margin was the Cambro-Ordovician rifting that opened the Rheic Ocean. The mechanism of this rifting is reconstructed based on new U-Pb zircon ages, and it is suggested that stretching of the lower lithosphere preceded upper lithospheric rifting, leading to the breakup of Gondwana.

Reconstruction of the mid-Devonian HP-HT metamorphic event in the Bohemian Massif (European Variscan belt)

Stephen Collett et al.

Summary: This article investigates the high-pressure and high-temperature metamorphism during the Mid-Devonian period in the Variscan Orogeny, focusing on the geological characteristics of the Marianske Lazne Complex (MLC). The unique position of MLC at the base of its original upper plate is highlighted. The study reveals that both MLC and the upper plate developed above a relatively unaltered Neoproterozoic lithospheric mantle, which is important for reconstructing the original architecture of the Variscan terranes.

Combined phase diagram modelling and quartz-in-garnet barometry of HP metapelites from the Kamieniec Metamorphic Belt (NE Bohemian Massif)

Jacek Szczepanski et al.

Summary: The Kamieniec Metamorphic Belt in the NE part of the Bohemian Massif is a supracrustal succession dominated by micaschists that has not been recognized as a high-P, low-T metamorphic unit. Investigation of samples from the belt reveals high-pressure metamorphism followed by a low-pressure event, typical for subduction systems. This suggests that the belt likely represents fragments of the Saxothuringian crust affected by cold extrusion within a tectonic model involving multiple domains in the Bohemian Massif.

Pre-collisional crustal evolution of the European Variscan periphery: Constraints from detrital zircon U-Pb ages and Hf isotopic record in the Precambrian metasedimentary basement of the Brunovistulian Domain

Igor Soejono et al.

Summary: This study investigates the U-Pb ages and Hf isotopic composition of detrital zircons from the Precambrian metasedimentary autochthon of the Brunovistulian Domain in the eastern Bohemian Massif. The results shed light on the pre-collisional evolution of the eastern periphery of the European Variscan belt. The detrital zircons show different age and isotopic characteristics depending on the Tonian and Ediacaran sequences, indicating distinct magma sources and geological processes. The findings challenge the existing hypotheses about the Rheic oceanic suture and propose an alternative pre-collisional model of the Bohemian Massif as a single Neoproterozoic crustal domain.

Detrital zircon analysis of metasedimentary rocks of the Stare Most Belt, Sudetes: implications for the provenance and evolution of the eastern margin of the Saxothuringian terrane, NE Bohemian Massif

Marek Sliwinski et al.

Summary: The Stare Mesto Belt in the Central Sudetes is a tectonic boundary zone composed of metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks. New research suggests that these rocks originally formed in the Late Cambrian volcanic sedimentary successions, with the sedimentary basins dominated by Neoproterozoic and Paleoproterozoic crystalline rocks. Comparisons with previous studies indicate a strong association between the Stare Mesto Belt and the Saxothuringian terrane. Partial melting of the middle unit's metasedimentary rocks caused the resetting of U-Pb dates.

Early Paleozoic accretionary orogens along the Western Gondwana margin

Sebastian Oriolo et al.

Summary: Early Paleozoic accretionary orogens in Western Gondwana were characterized by continuous subduction, high-temperature metamorphism, and crustal extension. Retreating-mode accretionary orogens played a key role in the Early Paleozoic evolution of Gondwana, with slab roll back influencing geodynamic processes. This study highlights the importance of understanding the common tectonic processes in Western Gondwana orogens during the Early Paleozoic.

On the origins of the Iapetus ocean

Boris Robert et al.

Summary: The study reconsiders the timing and framework of Iapetus opening by integrating observational records from Laurentia, Baltica, and Amazonia. By combining paleomagnetic data and a review of the mid-Neoproterozoic to Cambrian geology, a consistent and geodynamically feasible plate tectonic model is constructed. The breakup of the continents was polyphase, involving the opening of several oceans, including the Iapetus Ocean.

Summary: The study of the Velke Vrbno Dome eclogite provides evidence for the emplacement of eclogite protoliths in a transitional supra-subduction to continental-rift setting. Additionally, the discovery of a fragment of Palaeoproterozoic basement in the region suggests an earlier geological history.

Extending full-plate tectonic models into deep time: Linking the Neoproterozoic and the Phanerozoic

Andrew S. Merdith et al.

Summary: Recent progress in plate tectonic reconstructions has expanded beyond continental drift to reconstruct the full evolving configuration of tectonic plates and plate boundaries. A continuous full-plate model spanning 1 billion years to present-day has been developed, incorporating a revised model for the Neoproterozoic-Cambrian period and connecting it with models of the Phanerozoic. The model is geologically constrained and based on preserved data from past plate boundaries, with the goal of providing a detailed and self-consistent tectonic reconstruction for the last billion years of Earth's history.
