Nitrogen increases soil organic carbon accrual and alters its functionality

Bo Tang et al.

Summary: Nitrogen availability is critical for soil organic carbon (SOC) cycling and storage, but the effects of N enrichment on the SOC pool are highly variable. This study conducted a global meta-analysis to assess the impact of N addition on SOC components and their ratios. The results showed that N addition significantly increased the particulate organic carbon (POC) and mineral-associated organic carbon (MAOC) pools, while decreasing the ratios of MAOC to SOC and MAOC to POC. The study provides insights into the functionality of the SOC pool under N enrichment at a global scale.

Stimulation of ammonia oxidizer and denitrifier abundances by nitrogen loading: Poor predictability for increased soil N2O emission

Yong Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that nitrogen loading significantly increased the abundance of ammonia oxidizers and denitrifiers in soil, but this did not directly correlate with changes in soil N2O emission. Abiotic factors such as mean annual precipitation, soil pH, soil C:N ratio, and ecosystem type were key in regulating nitrogen-induced changes in soil N2O emission.

Response of soil nutrients and stoichiometry to grazing management in alpine grassland on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

Chenli Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, a meta-analysis of 53 peer-reviewed publications was conducted to explore the effects of grazing on soil nutrient levels in alpine grasslands. The results showed that grazing significantly decreased soil organic carbon, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, available phosphorus, soil moisture, and soil C:N ratio, while increasing soil bulk density and temperature. The effects of grazing on soil nutrients varied with grazing intensity, season, livestock type, and grazing duration, providing insights into sustainable management strategies in alpine grassland ecosystems on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

A global meta-analysis of nitrous oxide emission from drip-irrigated cropping system

Wennong Kuang et al.

Summary: A global meta-analysis of 485 field measurements showed that drip irrigation reduced N2O emissions by 32% compared to furrow systems, with an overall average emission factor of 0.35%. The emission factor was not significantly affected by climate, crop, soil properties, and synthetic N fertilizer source, but increased with N addition rate. Using the default EF overestimated N2O emissions inventories for drip-irrigated cropping systems, indicating that drip irrigation should be recommended as an essential N2O mitigation strategy for irrigated crop production.

Effect of Grazing Intensities on Soil N2O Emissions from an Alpine Meadow of Zoige Plateau in China

Wei Zhan et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of different grazing intensities on nitrous oxide emissions in alpine meadows on the Zoige Plateau. Results showed that grazing activities can influence N2O emissions, but the relationship between grazing intensity and N2O emissions is not always significant. Soil N2O emission rates were correlated with factors such as soil water-filled pore space and available phosphorus, highlighting the importance of proper grazing intensity in reducing N2O emissions.

Grazing exclusion reduces soil N2O emissions by regulating nirK- and nosZ-type denitrifiers in alpine meadows

Lu Zhang et al.

Summary: Our study investigated the effects of different management measures on soil N2O emissions and associated microbial communities in alpine meadows of the Tibetan Plateau. Grazing exclusion by fencing and reseeding decreased N2O emissions and gene abundances related to N2O production, but longer restoration periods were needed. Soil dissolved organic nutrients and moisture were key factors controlling N2O production by altering the community composition of denitrifiers.

Coupling Between the Responses of Plants, Soil, and Microorganisms Following Grazing Exclusion in an Overgrazed Grassland

Zhen Wang et al.

Summary: Grazing exclusion for 22 years in a degraded semiarid grassland ecosystem in northern China significantly increased soil bacterial alpha diversity and changed community structure. It had important implications for carbon cycling, nitrogen cycling, and soil fertility in the long-term restoration of grassland ecosystem functions.
