Nucleosynthetic isotope anomalies of zinc in meteorites constrain the origin of Earth?s volatiles

Rayssa Martins et al.

Summary: Material inherited from different nucleosynthesis sources imparts distinct isotopic signatures to meteorites and terrestrial planets. However, the origin of Earth's volatile elements has not been well-constrained. By analyzing 18 meteorites, we identified nucleosynthetic zinc isotope anomalies, indicating that about half of Earth's zinc inventory was delivered by carbonaceous bodies formed beyond the orbit of Jupiter. Combining these results with previous studies, it is estimated that carbonaceous material provided approximately 10% of Earth's mass.

Meteorites have inherited nucleosynthetic anomalies of potassium-40 produced in supernovae

Nicole X. Nie et al.

Summary: Meteorites record nucleosynthetic anomalies that occurred during the formation of the Solar System. Carbonaceous chondrite meteorites show larger and more variable anomalies, indicating that they inherited more material from supernova nucleosynthesis. Earth's potassium isotope ratios are similar to noncarbonaceous meteorites, suggesting that Earth's potassium was mostly delivered by noncarbonaceous meteorites.

Samples returned from the asteroid Ryugu are similar to Ivuna-type carbonaceous meteorites

Tetsuya Yokoyama et al.

Summary: Carbonaceous meteorites from C-type asteroids were examined using samples from asteroid (162173) Ryugu. The samples resemble carbonaceous chondrite meteorites, particularly the CI group, and are made up of minerals formed in aqueous fluids. These minerals were altered at a temperature of 37 degrees Celsius about 5.2 million years after the formation of the first solids in the Solar System. The Ryugu samples have a composition similar to the Sun's photosphere.

Solar system abundances and condensation temperatures of the halogens fluorine, chlorine, bromine, and iodine

Katharina Lodders et al.

Summary: In this study, the authors review the available data on meteoritic and stellar halogens and analyze their abundances in the solar system. They find that claims of lower chlorine, bromine, and iodine abundances in the solar system are not supported by nuclear abundance systematics and independent measurements in the Sun and other stars. The authors recommend values for halogen abundances in chondrites that are consistent with previously accepted values.

NanoSIMS analysis of water content in bridgmanite at the micron scale: An experimental approach to probe water in Earth's deep mantle

Ya-Nan Yang et al.

Summary: Water in trace amounts can greatly impact mantle minerals and is crucial for understanding the origin and evolution of Earth. The experimental technique of laser-heated diamond anvil cell (LH-DAC) provides a method to synthesize and recover samples resembling Earth's lower mantle conditions. By using nano-scale secondary ion mass spectrometry (NanoSIMS), researchers were able to characterize the water content in bridgmanite, the most abundant mineral in Earth's lower mantle.

Defining Earth's elusive thermal budget in the presence of a hidden reservoir

Amy L. Ferrick et al.

Summary: A hidden geochemical reservoir undermines traditional estimates of bulk silicate Earth composition and poses a challenge to modeling Earth's thermal evolution. This study presents a novel method for estimating heat production in the presence of a basal magma ocean and explores the parameter space. The results provide insight into the thermal evolution of Earth.

Experimental constraints on metal-silicate partitioning of chlorine and implications for planetary core formation

Xueping Yang et al.

Summary: By simulating the core-mantle differentiation process of terrestrial planets, we discovered that the partition coefficients of chlorine between metallic melt and silicate melt range from 0.003 to 1.38, indicating its siderophile behavior. These findings provide insights into the core formation processes of Earth and Mars, offering additional constraints for understanding the dynamics of core formation and volatile accretion.

Viscosity of bridgmanite determined by in situ stress and strain measurements in uniaxial deformation experiments

Noriyoshi Tsujino et al.

Summary: To understand mantle dynamics, it is important to determine the rheological properties of bridgmanite, the dominant mineral in Earth's mantle. Experimental data on the viscosity of bridgmanite are limited, but our in situ stress-strain measurements and deformation apparatuses provide viscosity and deformation mechanism maps of bridgmanite at the uppermost lower mantle conditions. The results show that bridgmanite is the hardest mineral even under dry conditions, and the lower mantle is isolated from the convecting mantle.

Nitrogen isotope evidence for Earth's heterogeneous accretion of volatiles

Lanlan Shi et al.

Summary: The origin of major volatiles in planets, particularly nitrogen, carbon, hydrogen, and sulfur, is crucial for understanding planetary formation and differentiation. Studies have shown that Earth may have acquired its major volatile inventory through the impact of various types of materials before and during the Giant Moon-forming impact.

A very early origin of isotopically distinct nitrogen in inner Solar System protoplanets

Damanveer S. Grewal et al.

Summary: Research indicates that the earliest formed protoplanets in the inner and outer protoplanetary disk accreted isotopically distinct nitrogen, suggesting differences in nitrogen isotopic composition between the inner and outer Solar System. The nitrogen in Earth and other rocky planets represents a mixture of material from both the inner and outer Solar System.

Loss and Isotopic Fractionation of Alkali Elements during Diffusion-Limited Evaporation from Molten Silicate: Theory and Experiments

Zhe J. Zhang et al.

Summary: Moderately volatile elements such as Na, K, and Rb are depleted differently in planetary bodies, and can be used as tracers to unravel the history of MVE depletion. Experimental studies at high temperatures have shown that diffusion plays a key role in governing the evaporation of K and Rb, leading to isotopic fractionation. Results suggest that the depletion of Na, Rb, and K in planetary bodies can be explained by evaporation from small, differentiated planetesimals under specific conditions.

Investigating Magma Ocean Solidification on Earth Through Laser-Heated Diamond Anvil Cell Experiments

Summary: The study indicates that in a pyrolitic magma ocean, the first mineral to crystallize in the deep mantle is iron-depleted calcium-bearing bridgmanite. The substantial calcium solubility in bridgmanite significantly delays the crystallization of the calcium silicate perovskite phase during magma ocean solidification.
