Sodium incorporation in foraminiferal calcite: An evaluation of the Na/Ca salinity proxy and evidence for multiple Na-bearing phases

William R. Gray et al.

Summary: The incorporation of sodium into the shells of foraminifera is still not well understood, and ongoing debates surround its location in the calcite crystal lattice and its potential complexation with organics. This study presents new measurements of sodium to calcium ratio (Na/Ca) in planktonic foraminifera using different analytical techniques, revealing elevated Na/Ca values measured by laser ablation ICP-MS compared to solution ICP-MS. The results suggest that Na is incorporated in at least two phases, with one primary phase within the CaCO3 mineral and one or multiple secondary phases likely contributing to the observed Na/Ca-salinity relationship.

Daily growth rate variation in Tridacna shells as a record of tropical cyclones in the South China Sea: Palaeoecological implications

Nanyu Zhao et al.

Summary: By studying a Tridacna squamosa shell from the northern South China Sea, it was found that the variations in daily growth rate were significantly different between the typhoon-affected season and the relatively stable growth season, and they were also correlated with environmental changes. This discovery suggests that the frequency of extreme daily growth rate variations in the shell has the potential to serve as a novel recorder for past tropical cyclone activity.

Ba/Ca profiles in shells of Pecten maximus - A proxy for specific primary producers rather than bulk phytoplankton

Lukas Froehlich et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the relationship between Ba/Ca-shell ratios and specific phytoplankton species and evaluated the applicability of Ba/Ca-shell ratios as a species-specific proxy for phytoplankton dynamics. The results showed that Ba/Ca-shell profiles were not explained by chlorophyll a concentration or total diatom and dinoflagellate abundance, but by specific phytoplankton time-series with a time lag of 8 to 13 days. Monte Carlo simulations suggested that Ba/Ca-shell peak heights were determined by individually weighted phytoplankton time-series, likely due to inter-species differences in cell size and chemical ability to adsorb Ba. Ba/Ca-shell peaks appeared to be associated with blooms of specific phytoplankton taxa, indicating the potential of Ba/Ca-shell ratios as a species-specific proxy for past phytoplankton dynamics.

Influence of normal tide and the Great Tsunami as recorded through hourly-resolution micro-analysis of a mussel shell

Yuji Sano et al.

Summary: Hourly variations of Mg/Ca, Sr/Ca, and Ba/Ca ratios in a Mediterranean mussel shell collected on the Pacific coast of northeastern Japan were reported. It was found that high Mg/Ca ratios were established by the cessation of external Ca supply and formation of an organic layer when the shell is closed, possibly due to a biological memory effect. Following a tsunami induced by the 2011 Tohoku earthquake, Mg/Ca enrichment occurred, while Ba/Ca enrichment was only observed for a few days, serving as a proxy of the past tsunami.

Giant clam growth in the Gulf of Aqaba is accelerated compared to fossil populations

Daniel Killam et al.

Summary: The study revealed that modern giant clams grow faster than Holocene and Pleistocene specimens, possibly due to increased deposition of isotopically light nitrate aerosols in the modern era. Additionally, colder winter temperatures and past summer monsoons may have suppressed the growth of fossil giant clams. Giant clams can serve as sentinels of reef environmental change, indicating the health status of both individual clams and the reefs they inhabit.

Host-influenced geochemical signature in the parasitic foraminifera Hyrrokkin sarcophaga

Nicolai Schleinkofer et al.

Summary: The geochemical signature of Hyrrokkin sarcophaga depends on the host organism it infests, with different hosts leading to different geological signals. Therefore, using its geochemical information to accurately reflect paleoenvironmental conditions requires consideration of its host information.
