Perovskite geochronology and petrogenesis of the Neoproterozoic Mad Gap Yards ultramafic lamprophyre dykes, East Kimberley region, Western Australia

Summary: The Mad Gap Yards ultramafic lamprophyre (UML) dykes are part of a Neoproterozoic magmatic province in the East Kimberley region of Australia. The dykes intrude the Paleoproterozoic Elgee Siltstone and contain alnoite rocks with macrocrystic olivine and other minerals. The composition and crystallization conditions of the rocks suggest that they were derived from a garnet-bearing asthenospheric mantle source. The emplacement of the dykes around 842 Ma coincides with the breakup of Rodinia.

Amphibole stability, water storage in the mantle, and the nature of the lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary

Summary: The stability of amphibole is affected by water fugacity, with decreasing water activity leading to a displacement of the stability field to lower pressures and higher temperatures. It is found that amphibole may form in a narrow pressure range along an oceanic geotherm for mantle containing 150-200 ppm water, contributing significantly to water storage. However, amphibole cannot account for the lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary due to its decomposition through a solid-state reaction for realistic mantle water contents.

Structure and evolution of the Australian plate and underlying upper mantle from waveform tomography with massive data sets

The model, which includes azimuthal anisotropy, was constructed using waveform inversion and a large dataset of vertical-component seismograms. New constraints on the structure and composition of the lithospheric mantle beneath the Slave craton, NW Canada from 3-D magnetotelluric data-Origin of the Central Slave Mantle Conductor and possible evidence for lithospheric scale fluid flow

Summary: Previously collected magnetotelluric data were used to create an improved 3D resistivity model of the Slave craton lithosphere. A low resistivity region was identified beneath the central Slave craton, known as the Central Slave Mantle Conductor (CSMC). The CSMC was previously interpreted as graphite films, but new analysis suggests alternative conduction mechanisms such as metasomatic phlogopite, grain boundary sulphides, and high density fluids including hydrous carbonatite melts or brines. Brines are preferred as they explain geophysical observations and are observed in fibrous diamonds coincident with the CSMC.

A New Shear-Velocity Model of Continental Australia Based on Multi-Scale Surface-Wave Tomography

Summary: In this study, we use seismic ambient noise and teleseismic earthquakes to compile a large dataset of surface-wave phase velocities and generate 3-D shear-wave velocity models of the Australian continent. Our model fills a gap in the known shear-wave velocity structure, showing strong heterogeneity in the upper crust and a large-scale decrease in shear-wave velocity in the mantle. We also observe a stripe of thicker lithosphere extending to the east coast, supporting the idea of lateral variations in lithospheric thickness controlling surface volcanism in eastern Australia.

Age and origin of the West Kimberley lamproites, Western Australia

Summary: New high precision 40Ar/39Ar ages are presented to tightly constrain the eruption ages of the West Kimberley lamproites of northwestern Western Australia. The southward progression of lamproite ages is likely related to regional uplift and small-scale mantle convection, rather than the migration of a mantle plume.

Mantle geothermometry: experimental evaluation and recalibration of Fe-Mg geothermometers for garnet-clinopyroxene and garnet-orthopyroxene in peridotite, pyroxenite and eclogite systems

Paleomagnetic constraints on the duration of the Australia-Laurentia connection in the core of the Nuna supercontinent

Summary: The Australia-Laurentia connection in the Paleoproterozoic to Mesoproterozoic supercontinent Nuna is believed to have started around 1.6 billion years ago, with new high-quality paleomagnetic data from around 1.3 billion years ago suggesting that the two continents were in the same configuration at that time. The breakup of Nuna likely occurred largely between around 1.3 and 1.2 billion years ago, with evidence pointing to a connection between Australia and North China during this period.

Age and geochemistry of the Boucaut Volcanics in the Neoproterozoic Adelaide Rift Complex, South Australia

Summary: Using U-Pb zircon LA-ICP-MS data, an age of 788 +/- 6 Ma has been determined for the eruption of the bimodal Boucaut Volcanics within the Neoproterozoic Adelaide Rift Complex. This age determination is important for constraining the timing of stratigraphy within the Adelaide Superbasin and has implications for plate tectonic reconstructions of Australia and Laurentia, as well as for correlating global isotope anomalies for the Neoproterozoic.

Assessing the presence of volatile-bearing mineral phases in the cratonic mantle as a possible cause of mid-lithospheric discontinuities

Summary: This study evaluated the possible presence of hydrous and carbonate mineral phases in cratonic mantle peridotite through experimental phase assemblages and updated elastic constants, showing that volatile metasomatism can explain the reduction in seismic shear wave velocity at MLD depths. The identified volatile-bearing mineral phases can account for a significant portion of the observed velocity reductions, but other mechanisms may also contribute to explaining the full range of velocity reduction at MLD depths globally.
