A Revised Estimate of Early Pliocene Global Mean Sea Level Using Geodynamic Models of the Patagonian Slab Window

Andrew Hollyday et al.

Summary: Paleoshorelines are influenced by solid Earth deformation, including glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) and mantle dynamic topography (DT), making them useful for measuring ancient sea levels and ice volumes. In Argentina, the present-day elevations of three early Pliocene paleoshorelines reflect a unique topographic deformation signature. Using a mantle convection model, scientists were able to identify the most likely convection parameters and DT change by comparing predictions of DT change to GIA-corrected shoreline elevations. The estimated global mean sea level in the early Pliocene Epoch confirms that sea level was significantly higher than present and can be used to calibrate ice sheet models.

Lower and Upper Plate Controls on Crustal Seismicity in the Southern Central and Patagonian Andes

Sebastian Correa-Otto et al.

Summary: We analyzed crustal seismological records to assess the origin of variable seismic activity in the southern Central and Patagonian Andes. By studying seismicity in terms of area covered, depth, latitude, and time, we found a consistent decrease in the number of earthquakes south of 38.5 degrees S. This decrease in seismic activity seems to be related to the properties of the lower plate and may have been triggered by the presence of young/warm and short subducting plates.

Plate Rotation of the Northern Antarctic Peninsula Since the Late Cretaceous: Implications for the Tectonic Evolution of the Scotia Sea Region

Liang Gao et al.

Summary: Plate reconstructions of the Antarctic Peninsula show its rotation and spatio-temporal history of magmatism since 90 Ma, using a combination of paleomagnetic data and geological evidence. It is found that the convergence variation between the Phoenix Plate and Antarctic Peninsula, as well as the back-arc extension of the Scotia Plate, correlate with five different plate rotation periods. The initiation of the South Sandwich subduction zone and the separation between the Antarctic Peninsula and South America can be explained by clockwise rotation of the Antarctic Peninsula starting at around 80 and 62 Ma, respectively.

Lateral variation in slab window viscosity inferred from global navigation satellite system (GNSS)-observed uplift due to recent mass loss at Patagonia ice fields

Raymond M. Russo et al.

Summary: The geographic coincidence of the Chile Ridge slab window and the Patagonia ice fields provides a unique opportunity to assess the effects of slab window rheology on glacial isostatic adjustment. Using newly collected or processed geodetic data, the study found that the mass loss of the ice fields since the Little Ice Age caused varying rates of crustal uplift, with the North Patagonia ice field experiencing 12-24 mm/yr uplift and the South Patagonia ice field reaching a maximum of 41 mm/yr. A three-dimensional viscoelastic finite element model was used to analyze the GIA response, revealing that the viscosity of the northern part of the slab window is approximately one order of magnitude lower than that of the southern part.

The effects of plate interface rheology on subduction kinematics and dynamics

Whitney M. Behr et al.

Summary: Tectonic plate motions are influenced by the composition of subducting crustal material and the viscosity of the subduction interface. This study uses numerical models to investigate the impact of subduction interface viscosity on subduction kinematics and dynamics. The results show that an increase in interface viscosity can decrease convergence speeds. The study also reveals the interplay between interface strength and overriding plate topography, as well as cases of slab break-off/tearing.

Lithospheric Erosion in the Patagonian Slab Window, and Implications for Glacial Isostasy

Hannah F. Mark et al.

Summary: The study reveals a slow velocity anomaly in the uppermost mantle of the Patagonian slab window, suggesting warm mantle temperature, low viscosity, and possible partial melt in the region. This supports the hypothesis of a connection between post-Little Ice Age anthropogenic ice mass loss and rapid glacial isostatic uplift observed geodetically.

Styles of Trench-Parallel Mid-Ocean Ridge Subduction Affect Cenozoic Geological Evolution in Circum-Pacific Continental Margins

Yangming Wu et al.

Summary: Through geodynamic modeling, this study reveals that trench-parallel mid-ocean ridge subduction can result in diverse geological evolution, with two distinct types of model evolution and different tectono-magmatic responses. This research helps explain the magmatic evolution and tectonic uplift in the circum-Pacific continental margins.

Effective seismic wave velocities and attenuation in partially molten rocks

Vladimir Lyakhovsky et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new mechanism explaining the significant reduction in mechanical properties and enhanced attenuation in areas of partially molten rocks. The mechanism involves solid-melt phase transition at thermodynamic equilibrium, where any pressure change causes solidification or melting and modifies the heat balance, leading to energy dissipation and seismic wave attenuation. The predicted values are approximately consistent with large scale seismological observations, indicating that seismic waves are mostly attenuated in Earth's crust and mantle due to the presence of melt.
