Protein Kinase C Controls the Excitability of Cortical Pyramidal Neurons by Regulating Kv2.2 Channel Activity

Zhaoyang Li et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that PKC activation inhibits Kv2.2 channel currents and alters their steady-state activation, showing that the function of Kv2.2 is dependent on its phosphorylation state. In cortical slices, PKC activation reduces the frequency of action potentials by regulating Kv2.2 channels.

Transcriptomic analysis provides insights into molecular mechanisms of thermal physiology

Melissa K. Drown et al.

Summary: Physiological trait variation plays a crucial role in health, responses to global climate change, and ecological performance. However, we still have limited knowledge about the genes and genomic architectures that define this variation. By studying the relationship between physiological traits and mRNA expression, we can gain insights into the genetic architecture of physiological processes and understand how mRNA expression is related to heritable fitness-related traits.

Polygenic Selection within a Single Generation Leads to Subtle Divergence among Ecological Niches

Moritz A. Ehrlich et al.

Summary: Through studying populations of Fundulus heteroclitus, it was found that while individually significant allele frequency changes were few, the number of moderate changes exceeded the neutral expectation by 10100%. The direction and magnitude of allele frequency changes were significantly consistent among different niche subpopulations, indicating parallel selection. Additionally, within-generation allele frequency changes resulted in subtle but significant divergence among niches, suggesting local adaptation.

Selection on adaptive and maladaptive gene expression plasticity during thermal adaptation to urban heat islands

Shane C. Campbell-Staton et al.

Summary: The rapid adaptive response of urban lizards to heat islands is mainly due to reduced and/or reversed heat-induced plasticity selected against. Urban lizards show decreased gene expression plasticity and increased adaptive gene expression changes after heat challenge compared to forest lizards in common garden conditions.

Interindividual plasticity in metabolic and thermal tolerance traits from populations subjected to recent anthropogenic heating

Melissa K. Drown et al.

Summary: By investigating metabolic performance and thermal tolerance in natural Fundulus heteroclitus populations from different thermal environments, we found substantial interindividual variation in responses to acclimation at different temperatures, potentially influenced by performance at 12 and 28 degrees C.

Gene Expression Response to Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease Transmission in M. cavernosa and O.faveolata From Florida

Nikki Traylor-Knowles et al.

Summary: The study conducted three different SCTLD transmission experiments in 2019-2020 and found that diseased corals exhibited significantly different gene expressions related to immunity, apoptosis, and tissue rearrangement compared to healthy colonies. The research suggests a complex immune and apoptosis response in corals during SCTLD transmission, emphasizing the importance of studying early infection time points to understand disease activation mechanisms.
