Phenolic profiles of non-industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) seed varieties collected from four different Moroccan regions

Chaymae Benkirane et al.

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the phenolic compounds and antioxidant power of hemp seeds grown in northern Morocco. A total of 33 phenolic compounds were identified, with N-trans-caffeoyltyramine, cannabisin A, and cannabisin B being the most abundant. The antioxidant activities varied among different tests, and the geographical location and genotype played significant roles in determining the phenolic compounds' content. Hemp seeds from Jebha and Galaz regions exhibited higher levels of phenolic compounds and stronger antioxidant activity compared to Tamorot and Ratba regions. This characterization provides valuable information for breeders in developing new hemp varieties.

The phytochemical diversity of commercial Cannabis in the United States

Christiana J. Smith et al.

Summary: The legal status of Cannabis is changing, leading to a wide range of Cannabis-derived products. However, the labeling of these products does not consistently align with the observed chemical diversity, which has implications for the classification, research design, and consumer marketing of Cannabis.

Chemical and genetic variation in feral Cannabis sativa populations across the Nebraska climate gradient

Lucas Busta et al.

Summary: This study investigates the phytochemistry and genomics of feral Cannabis populations collected from Nebraska. It found that both male and female flower tissues produced cannabinoids, with cannabidiol being the primary cannabinoid. The expression of genes related to cannabinoid biosynthesis was higher in female flowers, suggesting transcriptional control of cannabinoid abundance. DNA sequencing revealed that the feral Cannabis plants from Nebraska are more similar to hemp-type Cannabis plants than drug-type plants. This research provides foundational knowledge for future studies of feral Nebraska Cannabis.

Genetic identification of Cannabis varieties based on marker STR analysis: Preliminary studies

Magdalena Marcinska et al.

Summary: This article introduces the types of cannabis plants and the method of distinguishing them using genetic identification. By analyzing the sample database and conducting statistical analysis, a genetic marker method for cannabis identification has been developed. This will provide forensic experts with an accurate identification tool.

Bioactive compounds from hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) seeds: optimization of phenolic antioxidant extraction using simplex lattice mixture design and HPLC-DAD/ESI-MS2 analysis

Chaymae Benkirane et al.

Summary: The optimization of phenolic compounds extraction from defatted hempseeds was achieved using a mixture design with three solvents. The results showed that the binary acetone-water mixture in equal proportions yielded the highest total phenolic content and antioxidant activity. The HPLC analysis revealed the presence of hydroxycinnamic acid amides and lignanamides as the predominant phenolic compounds. N-trans-caffeoyltyramine, cannabisin A, and cannabisin B were identified as potentially contributing strongly to the potent antioxidant activity of hempseed extracts.

Identification of Phenotypic Characteristics in Three Chemotype Categories in the Genus Cannabis

Dan Jin et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the morphological traits of 21 Cannabis cultivars with three chemical phenotypes, and identified significant differences in leaflet shape, inflorescence compactness, trichome density, and resistance to Botrytis cinerea among CBD dominant, intermediate, and THC dominant cultivars. The phenotype markers identified in this study can facilitate preliminary cultivar identification and selection on live plants before chemical and genetic analysis.

Seed composition of non-industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) varieties from four regions in northern Morocco

Yassine Taaifi et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the chemical composition of hemp seeds from two varieties cultivated in four different regions of northern Morocco. The results showed that the composition of the seeds was strongly influenced by the variety, growing area, and their interaction. The findings could be valuable for breeding programmes aiming to develop non-conventional oil varieties for cosmetic and agro-industrial use.

Developing and Testing Molecular Markers in Cannabis sativa (Hemp) for Their Use in Variety and Dioecy Assessments

Marcello Borin et al.

Summary: This study developed a set of simple sequence repeat markers for genotyping high breeding value Cannabis sativa lines, successfully extracting information on homozygosity, genetic uniformity, and genetic variation. Population structure analysis identified eight genetic groups, clustering individuals based on sexual behaviors and geographical origins. The study provides important tools for genetic characterization, authentication, conservation of biodiversity, genetic improvement, and traceability of this increasingly important plant species.
