miR395-regulated sulfate metabolism exploits pathogen sensitivity to sulfate to boost immunity in rice

Zeyu Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, researchers discovered that rice miR395 enhances resistance against bacterial pathogens by modulating sulfate accumulation and distribution. miR395 promotes sulfate accumulation by targeting and suppressing the expression of OsAPS1, OsSULTR2;1, and OsSULTR2;2, resulting in inhibition of bacterial proliferation. Furthermore, miR395-regulated sulfate accumulation impairs the virulence of bacteria, providing a potential strategy for broad-spectrum resistance.

The rice miR171b-SCL6-IIs module controls blast resistance, grain yield, and flowering

Yan Li et al.

Summary: In this study, it was discovered that the miR171b-SCL6-IIs module regulates the balance between blast resistance, grain yield, and flowering in rice. Overexpression of miR171b enhanced blast resistance but delayed flowering and reduced grain yield, while silencing miR171b expression increased susceptibility to blast disease, early heading, and decreased grain yield. The miR171b targets SCL6-IIa, SCL6-IIb, and SCL6-IIc, and their mutations resulted in similar phenotypes to miR171b overexpression. The expression patterns of miR171b and SCL6 genes varied during different stages of rice growth, indicating their essential roles in rice development.

In planta transcriptome analysis reveals tissue-specific expression of pathogenicity genes and microRNAs during rice-Magnaporthe interactions

H. B. Mahesh et al.

Summary: Transcriptional re-programming occurs in both host and pathogen during leaf and neck infection, resulting in tissue-specific and infection-specific gene expression patterns. Different sets of genes are uniquely expressed in leaf and neck tissues, with certain genes being up-regulated during infection in each tissue. MicroRNA sequencing reveals differential expression of microRNAs targeting specific transcripts in response to infection, providing insights into the dual-epidemics of blast disease.

Fine-Tuning Roles of Osa-miR159a in Rice Immunity Against Magnaporthe oryzae and Development

Jin-Feng Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that rice microRNA159a plays a positive role in rice resistance to rice blast disease by regulating target genes to modulate the immune response. Proper expression of Osa-miR159a is crucial for coordinating rice blast resistance with grain development.

Rice miR1432 Fine-Tunes the Balance of Yield and Blast Disease Resistance via Different Modules

Yan Li et al.

Summary: miR1432 acts as a fine-tuner in regulating plant growth and resistance. Its overexpression compromises resistance and yield, while blocking miR1432 enhances them. MiR1432 suppresses LOC_Os03g59790, affecting rice yield and blast disease resistance, showing that miR1432 can balance yield and resistance by targeting different genes.

The Critical Role of Small RNAs in Regulating Plant Innate Immunity

Saquib Waheed et al.

Summary: Plants have an innate immune system to defend against pathogen infections, involving complex molecular networks and gene expression regulation. Small RNAs play versatile roles in plant growth, development, and immunity, including PTI and ETI. However, the specific contribution of small RNAs in plant immunity against pathogens is still limited in available information.

Hybrid de novo genome-reassembly reveals new insights on pathways and pathogenicity determinants in rice blast pathogen Magnaporthe oryzae RMg_Dl

Bhaskar Reddy et al.

Summary: The whole genome of rice infecting Magnaporthe oryzae (Strain RMg_Dl) was sequenced to understand genetic variability, host specificity, and molecular basis of pathogenicity-associated traits. Comparative genome analysis revealed high similarity with other oryzae genomes, and various virulence factors and biochemical pathways were identified. The information generated will aid in developing specific markers for diagnosis, pathogen surveillance, and improved management strategies for blast disease.

Genome assisted molecular typing and pathotyping of rice blast pathogen, Magnaporthe oryzae, reveals a genetically homogenous population with high virulence diversity

Neelam Sheoran et al.

Summary: Genome sequencing-based molecular typing tools have the potential to uncover genetic diversity of rapidly evolving plant pathogens like Magnaporthe oryzae. A new molecular typing technique was reported for genetic analysis of M. oryzae, revealing genetically homogenous populations within single fields and plant niches. Different genetic loci showed varying degrees of polymorphism, with no congruence found between polymorphic virulence genes and conserved housekeeping genes.

Summary: miR812w is a newly identified member of the rice miRNA family that plays a role in disease resistance, synthesized by DCL3 and loaded into AGO4 protein. Overexpression of miR812w enhances resistance to rice blast fungus, while CRISPR/Cas9-mediated editing of MIR812w increases disease susceptibility.
