Three-dimensional movement of the beak during seed processing in domestic canaries

Summary: This study analyzed the 3D movement of the beak in feeding domestic canaries using multi-view high-speed imaging, revealing that the correlation of upper and lower beak movement differs among phases of seed processing. The beak can move at extremely high frequencies, up to 25 Hz, resembling maximal syllable rates in singing canaries. Specific 3D mandible movements are used by canaries during different phases of seed processing, with no kinematic differences between male and female canaries.
