Non-coding RNAs in human health and disease: potential function as biomarkers and therapeutic targets

Tamizhini Loganathan et al.

Summary: Human diseases pose a significant threat throughout history, and understanding their origin, progression, and treatment is crucial. The microscopic analysis of the molecular field provides a more coherent and accurate approach to explore disease mechanisms, progression, and therapy compared to a macroscopic approach. Non-coding RNAs play increasingly important roles in detecting, developing, and treating abnormalities in physiology, pathology, genetics, epigenetics, cancer, and developmental diseases. This study review focuses on the significance of non-coding RNA as specific biomarkers and novel therapeutic targets in various diseases.

Exosomal miRNAs-a diagnostic biomarker acting as a guiding light in the diagnosis of prostate cancer

Sougata Ghosh Chowdhury et al.

Summary: Prostate cancer is a leading cause of mortality among men globally, and it affects surrounding stromal cells through exosomes, which can promote cancer growth and drug-resistance. The discovery of miRNAs as regulators of gene expression has raised interest in using exosomal miRNAs as biomarkers for prostate cancer diagnosis and as a potential treatment option. This review aims to analyze the role of exosomal miRNAs in prostate cancer treatment and their potential in monitoring the disease.

A review on CRISPR/Cas: a versatile tool for cancer screening, diagnosis, and clinic treatment

Xianguang Yang et al.

Summary: Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide, but with the development of new technologies and techniques, cancer mortality rates have dropped and the survival time of patients has improved. The Nobel Prize-winning CRISPR/Cas technology provides hope for cancer screening, diagnosis, treatment, and drug development. Various CRISPR/Cas editors have been developed and used in cancer biology research and applications. CRISPR/Cas-based gene therapy shows promise in treating cancer, but concerns about efficiency and safety remain.

KLF16 Downregulates the Expression of Tumor Suppressor Gene TGFBR3 to Promote Bladder Cancer Proliferation and Migration

Xiaosong Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that KLF16 acts as an oncogene in bladder cancer by transcriptional inactivation of TGFBR3. This study provides evidence that targeting the KLF16/TGFBR3 axis may be beneficial for bladder cancer patients.

Diagnostic and prognostic potential clustered miRNAs in bladder cancer

Akshay Pramod Ware et al.

Summary: In this study, the abnormal expression of miRNA clusters residing within copy number variations (CNVs) in bladder cancer was investigated. The study identified upregulated miRNA clusters on CNV gain regions and correlated certain miRNA clusters with patient survival. These miRNA clusters targeted downregulated genes in bladder cancer and identified potential hub genes for diagnosis and prognosis. Notably, the expression of certain miRNA clusters showed significant differences during cancer progression. Additionally, the upregulation of NOTCH1 by specific miRNA clusters may sensitize bladder cancer to methotrexate. An automated pipeline for integrated data analysis of multiple cancer types was also developed.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.
