Lignin valorization: Status, challenges and opportunities

Sivasamy Sethupathy et al.

Summary: As an abundant aromatic biopolymer, lignin holds great potential for producing various chemicals and biofuels through biorefinery activities, contributing to a sustainable circular economy. However, lignin valorization faces challenges such as its heterogeneous nature, intrinsic recalcitrance, strong smell, dark color, difficulties in lignocellulosic fractionation, and high bond dissociation enthalpies in its functional groups. Despite these constraints, recent research and development have shown promising applications of lignin-based hydrogels, surfactants, 3D printing materials, electrodes, and fine chemicals production. This review summarizes the main limitations and possible solutions for industrial lignin valorization, and provides future perspectives based on its abundance and potential applications reported in scientific literature.

Rational highly dispersed ruthenium for reductive catalytic fractionation of lignocellulose

Zhenzhen Liu et al.

Summary: Producing monomeric phenols from lignin biopolymer depolymerization in a detachable and efficient manner has attracted significant attention for the fullest utilization of sustainable lignocellulosic biomass. In this study, a low-loaded and highly dispersed Ru anchored on a chitosan-derived N-doped carbon catalyst (RuN/ZnO/C) is reported. This catalyst exhibits outstanding performance in the reductive catalytic fractionation of lignocellulose, achieving nearly theoretical maximum yields of phenolic monomers from lignin. The selectivity towards propyl end-chained guaiacol and syringol allows for easy purification, and the process leaves high retention of (hemi)cellulose for enzymatic hydrolysis. The good stability and transformation of Ru species contribute to the effectiveness of the catalyst. Time-course experiments and reactivity screening shed light on the mechanism. Overall, this work opens up new possibilities for the valorization of lignin and the economic feasibility of lignocellulosic biomass.

Catalytic conversion of high S-lignin to a sustainable tri-epoxide polymer precursor

Baoyuan Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, a genetically modified high-S poplar lignin was used to produce renewable thermoset plastics. A series of catalytic reactions were employed to extract 4-propyl-2,6-dimethoxyphenol (DMPP) from high-S poplar lignin, convert it to propylpyrogallol (DMPPO), and then react with epichlorohydrin to yield a novel tri-epoxide. Direct reductive catalytic fractionation of the high-S poplar wood gave the highest yield of biophenol monomers, mainly DMPP, using Pd-Zn/C catalyst. Nb2O5 catalyst could efficiently convert DMPP to DMPPO without extensive prior purification. This study demonstrates a feasible strategy for producing renewable polymer building blocks from lignin-derived DMPPO.
