A review of bio-refining process intensification in catalytic conversion reactions, separations and purifications of hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) and furfural

Jernej Slak et al.

Summary: This review explores the utilization of process intensification (PI) techniques in the biorefining industry for 5-HMF and FUR production and purification, highlighting the potential of reactive extraction in microreactors and other approaches. While mineral acid-catalyzed aqueous systems yield the highest product yields, their purification and recycling are costly and laborious. Solid-acid catalysts in biphasic solvent systems show promise, with NaCl improving extraction power and selectivity. The pervaporation assisted continuous membrane reactor holds potential for large-scale FUR production.

Engineering Pore Nanostructure of Carbon Cathodes for Zinc Ion Hybrid Supercapacitors

Wenbin Jian et al.

Summary: Zinc ion hybrid supercapacitors (ZIHCs) have great potential for energy storage applications due to their high power density and energy density. However, the large radius of hydrated Zn2+ ions hinders their efficient storage in micropores with limited sizes, resulting in limited specific capacitance and rate capability of ZIHCs. Therefore, understanding the extent to which pore size influences the storage of hydrated Zn2+ ions in small pores is crucial.

Yung Wei Hsiao et al.

Summary: In this study, a simple and green pathway for the hydrodeoxygenation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF) using copper catalyst and isopropyl alcohol (IPA) was revealed. The density functional theory calculations showed that the Cu(211) facet had a higher proportion in nanosized catalysts and exhibited a lower energy barrier for the dehydrogenation of IPA. The experimental results demonstrated that the Cu/PBSAC catalyst achieved a conversion of 91.9% for HMF and a selectivity of 71.7% for DMF in a 6-hour batch reaction at 190 degrees C, with a DMF yield of over 96% in 10 hours. Moreover, the mechanical strength of the carbon support was ideal for continuous processing, achieving a DMF yield of over 90% at a weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) of 2.4 hr.
