Biofuel production, hydrogen production and water remediation by photocatalysis, biocatalysis and electrocatalysis

Ahmed I. Osman et al.

Summary: In response to the energy crisis and environmental pollution, research on efficient methods such as environmental catalysis for biofuel production and water purification has increased. Environmental catalysis involves the use of green catalysts to break down pollutants and produce chemicals without generating undesirable by-products. This review focuses on environmental photocatalysis, biocatalysis, and electrocatalysis, covering catalyst synthesis, structure, and applications. Biomass-derived materials, metal-organic frameworks, non-noble metals nanoparticles, nanocomposites, and enzymes are common catalysts. Water pollutants can be efficiently degraded using heterogeneous Fenton catalysis, with degradation rates ranging from 71.7% to 100%. Photocatalysis can produce dihydrogen (H-2) at a generation rate exceeding 100 μmol h(-1), while methane cracking yields dihydrogen ranging from 27% to 88%. Biodiesel production ranges from 48.6% to 99%.

Engineering a phase transition induced g-C3N5/poly (triazine imide) heterojunction for boosted photocatalytic H2 evolution

Zhuoran Xiong et al.

Summary: By one-step molten-salt approach, a g-C3N5/poly (triazine imide) (PTI) heterojunction was successfully constructed, with the relative content of PTI in the heterojunction controllable by changing the calcination temperature. The optimal g-C3N5/PTI heterojunction exhibited the highest photocatalytic H-2 production rate, which was 2.7 and 6.7 times higher than that of pure g-C3N5 and PTI, respectively. The improved photocatalytic activity of g-C3N5/PTI was mainly attributed to the charge transport pathway provided by the S-scheme heterostructure and the construction of the hierarchical structure, ensuring sufficient charge separation and migration.

Novel inverse opal Bi2WO6/Bi2O3 S-scheme heterojunction with efficient charge separation and fast migration for high activity photocatalysis

Wenliang Liu et al.

Summary: Efficient separation and migration of photogenerated charge carriers are crucial for enhancing photocatalytic performance. In this study, a novel IOBi2WO6/Bi2O3 S-scheme heterojunction with an inverse opal structure was prepared using a hydrothermal technique followed by calcination. The IOBi2WO6/15Bi2O3 heterojunction exhibited the highest photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity, reaching up to 312.56 mol g-1h-1, which was significantly higher than that of pristine Bi2WO6 (32.15 mol g-1h-1) and IOBi2WO6 (92.15 mol g-1h-1). The apparent quantum efficiency of the heterojunction was 8.9% at 420 nm. The enhanced photocatalytic activity was attributed to the synergy between the formation of the Bi2WO6/Bi2O3 S-scheme heterojunction and the construction of the inverse opal structure. The mechanism and driving force of charge carriers' transfer and separation were investigated and discussed using density functional theory calculation. This study provides a promising approach for preparing efficient charge carriers' separation and migration heterojunction photocatalysts for practical applications.
