Ni-Ru-MgO catalyst with high activity and stability for methanation of syngas and producer gas

Tinku Baidya et al.

Summary: This study investigated a new catalyst composition comprised of Ni, Ru, and MgO to improve the methanation performance of sub-stoichiometric H2/CO-ratio producer gas from biomass gasification. The addition of Ru and MgO promoters optimized the catalytic activity and stability of the Ni catalyst. MgO enhanced the methanation activity, while Ru was responsible for improved catalytic stability in low H2/CO-ratio feed gas. The Ni-Ru-Mg catalyst showed higher stability compared to a commercial catalyst.

Producing eco-methane with raw syngas containing miscellaneous gases and tar by using a municipal solid waste char-based catalyst

Zhenfei Mei et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of impurities in the raw syngas on methanation over a MSWC-supported Ni-based catalyst. The H2/COx ratio, H2O concentration, and toluene concentration affected the production of CH4 and H2. A lower H2/COx ratio resulted in higher CH4 concentration and lower H2 concentration. H2O concentration below 12% did not inhibit methanation, while excessive H2O was detrimental and could damage the catalyst matrix. The Ni-MSWC catalyst showed good tolerance to toluene at lower concentrations, but higher concentrations caused carbon deposition and reduced CH4 yield. The introduction of H2O in syngas containing toluene alleviated carbon deposition but still inhibited methanation.

Direct synthesis of methane-rich gas from reed biomass pyrolysis volatiles over its biochar-supported Ni catalysts

Xia Yue et al.

Summary: The study proposed a new approach for the direct synthesis of methane-rich gases from reed pyrolysis volatiles using Ni catalysts supported on reed biochar, showing that freshwater reed biochar-supported Ni catalysts performed better than seawater reed biochar-supported catalysts and Ni/gamma-Al2O3 due to their specific surface areas and Ni-biochar interactions. The findings suggest that inexpensive Ni/FWBs are effective for synthesizing methane from biomass volatiles, providing an economically viable alternative for methane production from biomass.

Effect of Na and K impurities on the performance of Ni/CeZrOx catalysts in DBD plasma-catalytic CO2 methanation

Maria Mikhail et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of alkali metal (Na and K) on the physicochemical and catalytic behavior of Ni/CeZrOx catalysts during non-thermal plasma-assisted CO2 methanation were investigated. The presence of Na and K impurities resulted in decreased CO2 conversions, lower selectivity to CH4 and increased power consumption. The interaction with both the support and the active phase led to a more difficult reduction of the Ce-species, affecting the overall catalytic performance. Higher dielectric constant contributed to increased energy dissipation and favored the strong ionization of the gas contained in the reactor gap, resulting in CO formation.

Comparison of chars from municipal solid waste and wheat straw for understanding the role of inorganics in char-based catalysts during volatile reforming process

Zhenfei Mei et al.

Summary: This study compared the catalytic performance and structural changes of chars from municipal solid wastes and wheat straw in reforming volatiles. Results showed that char from municipal solid wastes was more active than that from wheat straw, with metals mainly existing as non-evaporable acid-soluble inorganics in the former and organically bound alkali and alkaline-earth metals in the latter. This finding will help improve the catalytic activity of char-based catalysts.

Pilar Tarifa et al.

Summary: The study found that Ce is a better catalyst promoter than Mg, achieving higher CO2 conversion rates and CH4 selectivity over a wider temperature range. The Ni-Mg-Ce/CDC catalyst reached the highest methane yield of 80% in the temperature range of 350-400 degrees C. Ce-promoted catalysts also exhibited high activity at low temperatures.

Enhancing the CO2 methanation activity of Ni/CeO2 via activation treatment-determined metal-support interaction

Shuangxi Lin et al.

Summary: The metal-support interaction was effectively regulated by low-temperature treatment of Ni2+ ions impregnated on ceria in reductive atmosphere and reduction-oxidation cycles, leading to enhanced catalytic performance in CO2 methanation. The Ni/CeO2 catalyst showed highly dispersed Ni nanoparticles, more surface oxygen vacancies, and weak basic sites, resulting in increased H2 and CO2 adsorption/activation capacity. The established interaction significantly improved the activity in CO2 methanation with high selectivity to CH4 and stability.
