Removal of heavy metals from aqueous solutions by modified waste silk

Md Shipan Mia et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel textile-based adsorbent was developed by modifying waste silk fabric with tannic acid. The results showed that the modified fabric exhibited high adsorption capacity and efficiency for the removal of heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions. The adsorption behavior of the adsorbent was well fitted with Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-first-order kinetic model. Moreover, the adsorbent demonstrated the capability of simultaneous removal of heavy metal ions and waste dyes.

Microinteraction Analysis between Heavy Metals and Coexisting Phases in Heavy Metal Containing Solid Wastes

Hao Deng et al.

Summary: Heavy metal containing solid wastes (HMSWs), the byproduct from industrial activities, bring severe environmental issues and health risks to human. Separating heavy metals from HMSWs for resourcing is the most effective way to mitigate their environmental risk. However, the composition of HMSWs is of great complexity, including various heavy metals with relatively low concentration, as well as coexisting phases with different types and inhomogeneous microstructures. These complexities lead to strong interactions between heavy metals and coexisting phases, causing the incomplete separation of heavy metals. Therefore, understanding their microinteractions is a necessary precondition to realize the full resourcing of HMSWs.

A novel strategy for enhancing anaerobic biodegradation of an anthraquinone dye reactive blue 19 with resuscitation-promoting factors

Jiafang Cai et al.

Summary: The study explored a novel method of using resuscitation-promoting factors (Rpfs) to enhance the degradation efficiency of the dye RB19 in anaerobic processes. Results showed that Rpfs efficiently promoted RB19 decolorization, increasing decolorization efficiency by over 20%. Additionally, Rpfs appeared to stimulate and enrich dye-degrading species of the family Peptostreptococcaceae, leading to higher RB19 decolorization efficiency.

Analysis of woody biomass utilization for heat, electricity, and CHP in a regional city of Japan

Takaaki Furubayashi et al.

Summary: This study analyzed a regional biomass energy system in Japan and found that the case with both CHP and DHS installed followed by heat demand was the most effective in reducing CO2 emissions. It also discovered that the capital costs associated with heat-only boilers were much higher compared to other scenarios, and that the cost of reducing CO2 would be larger than that of CHP even with lower CO2 emissions factor.

Municipal solid waste incineration fly ash to produce eco-friendly binders for sustainable building construction

Cristina Marieta et al.

Summary: The study aims to explore the feasibility of using municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI) fly ash as raw material for sintering belite cements. Results show that MSWI fly ashes have suitable composition, but proper pre-treatment is required to eliminate chloride and heavy metal traces, and to enhance pozzolanic activity. Additionally, the addition of vitreous silica in proper proportions is necessary.

Thermogravimetric analysis of co-combustion between municipal sewage sludge and coal slime: Combustion characteristics, interaction and kinetics

Yanlin Wang et al.

Summary: The combustion behaviors of municipal sewage sludge (SS), coal slime (CS) and their blends were studied, revealing significant interactions between SS and CS. SS improves ignition performance, while CS enhances activity in high temperature zones and improves slagging characteristics. The optimum synergy occurs at a 40% CS ratio, reducing the apparent activation energy of SS.

Investigation on combustion, gaseous pollutants emission and ash characteristics during co-combustion of semicoke and coal slime

Ruidong Zhao et al.

Summary: The co-combustion of semicoke and coal slime can improve the ignition and burnout performance of blends, but lead to a decline in the comprehensive combustion index. Adding coal slime can inhibit the co-combustion at the early stage, but promote fixed carbon combustion, while ash accumulation suppresses co-combustion again at the burnout stage.
