Reaction enthalpies for the hydrogenation of alkyl levulinates and levulinic acid on Ru/C- influence of experimental conditions and alkyl chain length

Jose Delgado et al.

Summary: This manuscript presents a detailed calorimetric study on the hydrogenation of levulinic acid and its esters over Ru/C catalyst. The reaction occurs through a two-step pathway with endothermic lactonization and exothermic hydrogenation steps. The study reveals that the reaction enthalpy is independent of reaction temperature, levulinate concentration, and solvent, and it does not depend linearly on the alkyl chain length for both steps.
