Combustion and emissions characteristics of methanol/gasoline CISI engines under different injection modes

Song Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, the combustion and emission characteristics of methanol/gasoline dual fuel engine with different injection modes, methanol direct injection plus gasoline port injection (MDI + GPI) or gasoline direct injection plus methanol port injection (GDI + MPI), were experimentally investigated. The results showed that MDI + GPI mode was more preferable for methanol/gasoline dual fuel engines.

Effects of isopropanol ratio at different excess air ratios on combustion and emissions characteristics of an isopropanol/gasoline dual-fuel combined injection SI engine

Decheng Li et al.

Summary: The development of green fuels is crucial for addressing energy crises and environmental issues. Isopropanol is a promising renewable fuel for SI engines, but there have been limited studies on its use in dual-fuel engines with combined injection technology. This study investigates the effects of isopropanol/gasoline dual-fuel combined injection on combustion and emissions characteristics. The results show that isopropanol addition improves combustion, increases power, and reduces emissions.

Combined impact of excess air ratio and injection strategy on performances of a spark-ignition port- plus direct-injection dual-injection gasoline engine at half load

Changming Gong et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigated the combined impact of excess air ratio (lambda) and injection strategy on the performance of a spark-ignition port-plus direct-injection (PI + DI) dual-injection gasoline engine at half load. The experimental results showed that brake mean effective pressure decreased with increasing lambda, while brake thermal efficiency initially increased and then decreased with increasing lambda. The lambda also had significant effects on various emissions such as carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon, nitrogen oxides, and soot.

Synergy Between Ceria and Metals (Ag or Cu) in Catalytic Diesel Particulate Filters: Effect of the Metal Content and of the Preparation Method on the Regeneration Performance

Valeria Di Sarli et al.

Summary: This study investigated the catalytic performance of metal-promoted CeO2 washcoated silicon carbide diesel particulate filters in soot oxidation. The amount and preparation method of the metal (Ag or Cu) were found to significantly influence the catalytic activity, with Ag-promoted catalysts prepared using method B showing the highest activity. The results suggest that the method of preparation plays a crucial role in enhancing the catalytic performance of the filters.

A Numerical Investigation of the Combined Effects of Initial Temperature and Catalyst Activity on the Dynamics of Soot Combustion in a Catalytic Diesel Particulate Filter

Gianluca Landi et al.

Summary: The study investigates the combined effects of initial temperature and catalyst activity on the regeneration dynamics of a catalytic diesel particulate filter (DPF) using CFD-based simulations. Results show different regeneration behaviors based on catalyst activity, with faster regeneration at high activity and a trade-off between time and peak temperature at intermediate activity. Optimal regeneration conditions involve setting the filter's initial temperature equal to the inlet gas temperature.

Effects of injection timing and CO2 dilution on combustion and emissions behaviors of a stoichiometric GDI engine under medium load conditions

Changming Gong et al.

Summary: This study analyzed and compared the effects of adding CO2 and retarding injection timing on combustion and emissions behaviors of a gasoline direct injection engine. The results showed that adding CO2 reduced peak cylinder pressure and heat release rate, and had an impact on cylinder temperature.

Improvement of combustion and emission by combined combustion of ethanol premix and gasoline direct injection in SI engine

Ze Liu et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the effects of different ethanol-gasoline ratios, direct injection timing, and ignition timing on the combustion and emissions of a SI engine. The results suggest that G25 with EPI + GDI is the best mode for high-efficiency combustion, and G25 with IT = 20°CA BTDC and DIT = 120°CA BTDC is the optimal operating condition for highest torque output. Additionally, particle number emissions show variations with different ethanol-gasoline ratios.

Combined effects of excess air ratio and EGR rate on combustion and emissions behaviors of a GDI engine with CO2 as simulated EGR (CO2) at low load

Changming Gong et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that simulated EGR (CO2) has a weaker impact on combustion compared to actual EGR, and results in increased peak cylinder pressure, heat release rate, and cylinder temperature under the same EGR rate and excess air ratio conditions. Additionally, simulated EGR (CO2) can improve the COVimep of the engine, while having minimal effect on CO and HC emissions in lean-burn and stoichiometric conditions. Overall, NOX and soot emissions decrease significantly with EGR rate, but soot emissions from simulated EGR (CO2) are higher than actual EGR under any excess air ratios.

Dual injection: An effective and efficient technology to use renewable fuels in spark ignition engines

Yuhan Huang et al.

Summary: Dual injection engines, using renewable fuels such as ethanol, methanol and hydrogen, have advantages including greater control flexibility, knock mitigation, engine downsizing, extended lean-burn limits, higher thermal efficiency and reductions of several emission species. Each renewable fuel targets different advantages of dual injection, with alcohol-gasoline dual injection providing anti-knock ability and hydrogen-gasoline dual injection extending lean-burn limits. Dual injection generally demonstrates higher thermal efficiency than single injection and effectively reduces particulate emissions.
