Condensation and adsorption characteristics of gaseous selenium on coal-fired fly ash at low temperatures

Bing Yuan et al.

Summary: Selenium in gaseous form is difficult to retain in solid phases during coal combustion due to its high saturated vapor pressure. Understanding the migration of SeO2(g) on ash particles in the low-temperature zone is essential for controlling selenium emission. The physically-bound Se in fly ash consists of selenium condensation and physical adsorption, with mullite showing the best performance in selenium capture at temperatures between 90-200 degrees C.

Stability evaluation of potentially toxic elements in MSWI fly ash during carbonation in view of two leaching scenarios

Weihua Li et al.

Summary: Carbonation treatment by alkaline fly ash affects the stability of potentially toxic elements (PTEs), increasing the leachability of PTEs, especially in acetic acid leaching. The formation of carbonate minerals in the ash matrix can decrease the environmental risk level of PTEs, but excessive carbonation can lead to an increase in environmental risk due to decalcification. Both natural and accelerated carbonation increase the potential environmental risk of PTEs in the carbonated fly ash matrix.

The effect of SO2 on CaO capture selenium in the flue gas: Density functional theory and experimental study

Yang Yu et al.

Summary: In this study, the mechanism of SO2 on the capture of selenium by CaO was investigated using density functional theory (DFT) and adsorption experiments. The results showed that SO2 could inhibit the capture of selenium by CaO, but also promote it within a certain concentration range. Additionally, SO2 and selenium oxides were found to chemically adsorb on the CaO surface, with SO2 having a stronger adsorption activity for selenium. Furthermore, it was observed that the CaSO4 surface was inert for selenium adsorption, and the transition of CaO to CaSO4 inhibited selenium adsorption.

Effect of hydrated lime on the migration behavior of selenium in the MSWI plants: Experimental and theoretical study

Bing Yuan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the migration behavior and transformation mechanism of selenium in semi-dry reactors used in municipal solid waste incineration. The results showed that the semi-dry reactor increased selenium retention and the proportion of selenite in fly ashes. Lime slurry spraying enhanced selenium capture by forming selenite, while HCl, SO2, and H2O inhibited selenium adsorption. Theoretical calculations revealed the reaction site for SeO2 adsorption on Ca(OH)2 surface.

A comprehensive emission inventory of hazardous air pollutants from municipal solid waste incineration in China

Zhiqiang Fu et al.

Summary: The release of hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) from municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) plants in China has raised concerns. This study established a comprehensive emission inventory of HAPs from MSWI plants in China from 2006 to 2017. The results showed that HAPs emissions initially increased and then stabilized due to the implementation of stricter emission standards. The emissions were concentrated in developed coastal provinces and cities. Continuous improvement in pollution control devices and MSWI management is crucial to minimize the harmful impacts of HAPs.

Improved removal of selenium by calcite-derived CaO with porosity and anti-sintering in presence of acid gas

Mengzhu Yu et al.

Summary: Injecting Ca-based sorbent into the furnace is a promising technology for controlling selenium emissions. Using calcite-derived CaO as a sorbent has shown significant advantages in terms of porosity and anti-sintering, with capture efficiency reaching up to 80-90% at 700-800 degrees Celsius. The effects of CO2 and SO2 on selenium capture differ, with CO2 inhibiting capture below 700 degrees Celsius due to the formation of CaCO3, and SO2 promoting capture at lower CaSO4 content but hindering capture at higher CaSO4 content.

Summary: The research found that selenite in simulated slurry can be reduced by SO2 to form amorphous elemental selenium, while selenate remains unaffected. Increasing SO2 concentration in flue gas accelerates the reduction of selenite, and the reduction reaction is exothermic. Additionally, the oxidation effect of S2O82- competes with the reduction effect of SO2.
