Pellet Size-Induced Increase in Catalyst Stability and Yield in Zeolite-Catalyzed 2-Butene/Isobutane Alkylation

Verena B. Hoepfl et al.

Summary: This study found that increasing the catalyst pellet size can reduce catalyst deactivation and increase the overall yield during its lifetime. This is due to limited mass transport in larger catalyst pellets, resulting in lower concentrations of butene at acid sites and suppressing the formation of heavy hydrocarbons that block active sites.

Elucidating the Zeolite Particle Size Effect on Butene/Isobutane Alkylation

Zhiqiang Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the alkylation performance of X zeolites with different particle sizes in a continuous-flow slurry reactor. The results showed that larger particle size can enhance catalyst stability, while smaller particle size is favorable for product diffusion. However, significant dealumination and structural defects can occur in smaller particles, impacting their acidity and overall alkylation performance. Thus, an optimal particle size range is speculated for the use of X zeolites in a slurry reactor for alkylation.

Comparative catalytic study on butene/isobutane alkylation over LaX and CeX zeolites: The influence of calcination atmosphere

Zhiqiang Yang et al.

Summary: The physicochemical properties and catalytic performance of CeX zeolites in isobutane alkylation were investigated by adjusting the Ce-IV content through changing the calcination atmospheres. The crystallinity of CeX zeolite was found to be negatively correlated with the Ce-IV content. The elimination of strong Bronsted acid sites was influenced by the calcination atmospheres, resulting in different acidity levels.

Insights into the confinement effect on isobutane alkylation with C4 olefin catalyzed by zeolite catalyst: A combined theoretical and experimental study

Shuo Li et al.

Summary: In this study, the confinement effect on zeolite catalysts for C4 alkylation was investigated using DFT calculations, experiments, and multi-techniques. The results showed that the main active sites for the reaction were located on the internal surface of the catalysts, and the external surface exhibited stronger selectivity for C4 olefin adsorption. The insights from this work provide important references for the design of highly effective zeolite catalysts.

Understanding the zeolites catalyzed isobutane alkylation based on their topology effects on the reactants adsorption

Piao Cao et al.

Summary: In this study, the adsorption properties of zeolites towards isobutane and 1-butene were investigated using CBMC simulations. It was found that the adsorption affinity decreases with the increase of Si/Al ratio, especially for 1-butene. The adsorption capacity depends on the interaction between adsorbents and adsorbates at low pressures, and on the effective void volume at high pressures. A relationship between the adsorption selectivity and catalytic stability was discovered, and BEA-15 and MTW-39 zeolites showed higher selectivity and stability.

An efficient preparation method of Y zeolite-based catalyst for Isobutane-butene alkylation

Meng Lin et al.

Summary: A green and effective treatment method for Y zeolite-based catalyst was proposed, which improved acid accessibility and diffusion performance while maintaining high acidity. The shaped catalyst underwent a pressured treatment to achieve solid state ion exchange, binder bonding, and pore expansion. Characterization results showed that binder bonding protected zeolite structure, leading to improved acid accessibility and diffusion performance through dealumination. The pressured environment promoted zeolite-binder interaction and migration of Al species. The best catalyst, NY-DPA-1, achieved a lifetime of 84 h and increased the alkylation reaction lifetime by 17%.

Summary: This study investigated the adsorption and diffusion behaviors of isobutane, 2-butene, and trimethylpentane on the silica surface with different surface groups using molecular dynamics simulations. Results showed that hydrophobic modification of the silica surface could improve the adsorption ratio of isoparaffin to olefins, while hydrophilic modification increased the surface polarity and interaction between surface groups. This work provides insights into strategies for mitigating solid acid deactivation.

Computation-guided descriptor for efficient zeolite catalysts screening in C4 alkylation process

Shuo Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a descriptor for catalyst deactivation based on the ratio of i-butane to 1-butene in micropores was proposed using CB-GCMC calculations. The pore structural topology was found to affect the competitive adsorption between i-butane and 1-butene, leading to different ratios in different zeolite frameworks. This descriptor shows promise for rational screening of more efficient zeolite catalysts for C4 alkylation.

Xinyan Sun et al.

Summary: CuHY catalysts prepared by solid-state ion exchange showed improved selectivity of C8 and trimethylpentanes in isobutane/2-butene alkylation, attributed to the 3d(10)4s(0) valence electron configuration of Cu+ which inhibits oligomerization of 2-butene and indirectly increases the local isobutane/olefin ratio around the acid sites of the catalyst.
