Effect of particle shape on biomass pyrolysis in a bubbling fluidized bed

Antonio Soria-Verdugo et al.

Summary: The effect of biomass particle shape on the conversion of beech wood during pyrolysis in a bubbling fluidized bed was investigated. The experimental results demonstrated that the pyrolysis velocity of the particles was proportional to their characteristic heat transfer length. The pyrolysis time ranged from 43 to 85 s at 500°C and from 27 to 53 s at 600°C.

Dual-dense gas-solid circulating fluidized bed reactor

Hengjun Gai et al.

Summary: Circulating fluidized bed reactors are widely used in the energy industry for gas-solid reactions. They can be classified into two categories based on fluidization regimes: dilute-dense and dual-dense. The concept of dual-dense gas-solid circulating fluidization has not been well understood, hindering its commercial application. This review provides a detailed analysis of the dual-dense system, including mechanism, structural and operating parameters, particle circulation prediction, gas-solid flow simulation, and potential applications, while identifying existing controversies and unresolved issues.

Axial segregation behaviour of a reacting biomass particle in fluidized bed reactors: experimental results and model validation

Stefano Iannello et al.

Summary: The axial segregation behavior of a single biomass particle in a lab-scale bubbling fluidized bed was investigated using both experimental and modeling approaches. The experiments were conducted with different sizes of beech wood particles under oxidizing or inert conditions. A one-dimensional model was developed to predict the particle's axial location over time, considering both dynamic and thermal conversion mechanisms. X-ray imaging techniques were used to identify endogenous bubbles and measure their size, which was used to propose an expression for the lift force on the fuel particle. The model provided accurate predictions, and the segregation behavior of the fuel particle was found to be independent of the fluidizing medium.

Gasification characteristics of waste plastics (SRF) in a bubbling fluidized bed: Effects of temperature and equivalence ratio

Si Woo Han et al.

Summary: The study investigated the air gasification properties of SRF with high content of residual mixed waste plastic in a lab scale bubbling fluidized bed gasifier. The results showed that gas yield increases and tar yield decreases as the operating temperature and air-to-fuel equivalence ratio (ER) increases, with changes in the concentration of various gases in the gas product. The H2/CO ratio increases with rising temperature and decreases with rising ER, while carbon conversion efficiency (CCE) and cold gas efficiency peak at 800 degrees C and ER of 0.25.

CFD study of the reactive gas-solid hydrodynamics in a large-scale catalytic methanol-to-olefin fluidized bed reactor

Zhanghao Wan et al.

Summary: A three-dimensional multiphase particle-in-cell model is established to study hydrodynamics and thermochemical characteristics during the methanol-to-olefin (MTO) process in a fluidized bed reactor. The results show that particles in the reactor have heterogeneous velocity, temperature, and heat transfer coefficient distributions. Increasing the methanol to catalyst ratio and wall temperature promotes olefin production.
