Technical and economic analysis of different colours of producing hydrogen in China

Junbo Huang et al.

Summary: This paper explores different types of hydrogen production and assigns each a different color to represent a gradual reduction in pollution. The basic principles, advantages, and disadvantages of various production methods are examined at a technical level. The study concludes that coal-based hydrogen production is currently the primary method in China, while converting brown and grey hydrogen to blue and turquoise hydrogen is more economically viable as CCUS technology matures. The challenges for green hydrogen lie in electrolyzer technology and high renewable power costs, which can be addressed by increasing hydrogen production using wind and light abandonment in the short term and transitioning to renewable energy generation for clean hydrogen production in the long term. Vigorously developing hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and reducing greenhouse gas emissions in transport are crucial for achieving carbon neutrality and ensuring a stable supply of blue and green hydrogen.

Hydrogen in energy transition: A review

Ankica Kovac et al.

Summary: The main step towards creating a carbon-neutral society is the implementation of renewable energy sources to replace fossil fuels; while hydrogen technology is recognized as the most promising choice, its large-scale implementation is still in progress. In the coming decades, we can expect the utilization of hydrogen's vast ecological potential.
