Predicting the effects of winter water warming in artificial lakes on zooplankton and its environment using combined machine learning models

Marek Kruk et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of climate warming on aquatic ecosystems, specifically focusing on the effects of increased water temperatures during winter on the biomass of zooplankton and their environment. By using innovative methods such as hierarchical clustering, eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), and SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) algorithms, the research finds that certain crustacean taxa experience a decrease in biomass under increased winter water temperatures, while other taxa such as rotifers and protozoans respond with an increase in biomass. Furthermore, the study predicts a decrease in chlorophyll a, suspended solids, and total nitrogen due to winter warming. The utilization of machine learning ensemble models in novel ways contributes to the research applicability of ecological unit responses to environmental change.

Climate change drives widespread shifts in lake thermal habitat

Benjamin M. Kraemer et al.

Summary: Long-term temperature changes in lakes lead to thermal habitat changes, exacerbated by seasonal and depth-related constraints. Tropical lakes show higher thermal non-overlap compared to lakes at other latitudes, and lakes with high biodiversity and endemism exhibit higher thermal habitat changes.
