The non-native charophyte Nitellopsis obtusa (starry stonewort) influences shifts in macrophyte diversity and community structure in lakes across a geologically heterogeneous landscape

Tyler J. Harrow-Lyle et al.

Summary: Nitellopsis obtusa, a non-native charophyte, was introduced to the Laurentian Great Lakes in the 1970s. In recent years, it has been increasingly reported that N. obtusa is invading inland lakes in the Great Lakes basin. A study in south-central Ontario sampled 60 lakes to assess the impacts of N. obtusa on macrophyte communities. It was found that high abundance of N. obtusa was associated with reduced macrophyte diversity, and its presence was related to human activities, land-use, and cation levels. While N. obtusa had positive associations with some native Characeae species, it negatively co-occurred with most other macrophytes, including the non-native Myriophyllum spicatum. The study suggests that the expansion and establishment of N. obtusa may pose a threat to native fish habitat by causing significant changes to macrophyte communities.

Metal contamination in alkaline Phantom Lake (Flin Flon, Manitoba, Canada) generates strong responses in multiple paleolimnological proxies

Brigitte Simmatis et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of a copper-zinc smelter in Flin Flon, Manitoba on Phantom Lake by analyzing biological and geochemical proxies in a sediment core collected seven years after the smelter closed in 2010. The results showed that smelting activities led to increased metal concentrations in sediments, significant effects on diatom records, and reduced lake-water total organic carbon.

Lakes in Hot Water: The Impacts of a Changing Climate on Aquatic Ecosystems

R. Iestyn Woolway et al.

Summary: Climate change has significant impacts on aquatic ecosystems, including reduced ice cover, longer summer stratified seasons, and a cascade of ecological consequences. These consequences affect water temperature, mixing and water levels, dissolved oxygen, algal blooms, and cold-water fisheries' habitat. Climate change also affects freshwater supplies, water quality, biodiversity, and the ecosystem benefits they provide to society.

Summary: This study presents chironomid species assemblage data from 402 lakes to inform interpretations of Holocene subfossil chironomid assemblages used in paleolimnological reconstruction. The new training set offers more climatic analogues for the Holocene climates in the region and provides improved characterization of species optima.

Summary: Anthropogenic stressors have widespread impacts on lakes in Canada, leading to changes in primary production and diatom communities. The main drivers of these changes are climate and land use, and different ecozones contribute to variations in diatom assemblages and turnover.

Arctic chironomids of the northwest North Atlantic reflect environmental and biogeographic gradients

Andrew S. Medeiros et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the distribution of chironomids in the Arctic region and found that environmental controls play a major role in influencing chironomid assemblages within each region, while spatial controls are significant only when crossing between regions. Environmental gradients, especially temperature, define species distributions within each region, with spatial processes combining with environmental gradients in determining the mix of species characterizing each broad and unique island region.

Arsenic and mercury contamination and complex aquatic bioindicator responses to historical gold mining and modern watershed stressors in urban Nova Scotia, Canada

Allison J. Clark et al.

Summary: Gold mining activities in Nova Scotia released contaminants into local environments, impacting sedimentary arsenic and mercury levels in nearby urban lakes. While mercury concentrations at Lake Charles have recovered to pre-mining levels since 1990, arsenic levels remain elevated, indicating incomplete geochemical and biological recovery despite the mine district's closure 80 years ago.

Multi-trophic level responses to environmental stressors over the past ∼150 years: Insights from a lake-rich region of the world

Katherine Griffiths et al.

Summary: Multiple stressors impact water quality and biodiversity in lakes worldwide, but the understanding of their effects is fragmented. This study in Canadian lakes found greater turnover of diatom functional groups in high human impact sites, with similar trends in chironomid and cladoceran groups. Differences in temporal turnover and sensitivity across ecozones suggest variations in response to human impacts.

Multi-scale biodiversity analyses identify the importance of continental watersheds in shaping lake zooplankton biogeography

Cindy Paquette et al.

Summary: The study examined the composition and diversity of crustacean zooplankton across different spatial scales in Canada. The results showed distinct differences in taxonomic and functional composition when considered by continental basin, with alpha-diversity varying greatly across space. Beta-diversity was mainly driven by richness differences across all spatial and biodiversity dimensions.

Global acceleration of lake sediment accumulation rates associated with recent human population growth and land-use changes

Alexandre Baud et al.

Summary: The study found that global lake sediment accumulation rates have accelerated since 1950, with key drivers identified as watershed population density and cropland density. Additionally, organic matter content was identified as a significant covariate for correcting recent sedimentation rates.
