Warming-induced drought leads to tree growth decline in subtropics: Evidence from tree rings in central China

Mengdan Jing et al.

Summary: This study examined the growth patterns and species-specific responses of four main tree species in subtropical China to recent warming and drought using dendrochronological method. Results showed that long-term drought caused by global warming and reduced precipitation led to growth decline in three tree species, but not in one tree species. Tree growth was positively correlated with precipitation and relative humidity, while negatively correlated with vapor pressure deficit.

Responses of radial growth of Pinus massoniana and Castanopsis eyrei to climate change at different elevations in south China

Mengdan Jing et al.

Summary: This study examines the adaptability of subtropical trees, Pinus massoniana and Castanopsis eyrei, to climate change through dendrochronological analysis. The results reveal that long-term drought caused by rapid warming and reduced precipitation has led to a decline in radial growth of trees, except for low elevation P. massoniana. The temperature and humidity have different effects on tree growth at different elevations. The findings suggest that forest management should consider species- and elevation-related tree growth-climate relationships.

Elevation-dependent growth trends of forests as affected by climate warming in the southeastern Tibetan Plateau

Songlin Shi et al.

Summary: The study shows that climate warming has a significant impact on the growth of alpine conifers in recent decades, leading to faster growth at higher elevations compared to lower elevations. Temperature plays a key role in tree growth, with higher temperatures promoting radial growth in most coniferous species, but causing significant growth decreases in species like P. yunnanensis.

Comparison of the responses of radial growth to climate change for two dominant coniferous tree species in the eastern Qilian Mountains, northwestern China

Summary: The study found that Qinghai spruce was mainly restricted by the minimum temperature in July and October, while Chinese pine was mainly restricted by the mean temperature in September of the previous year, January, and July, as well as the maximum temperature in March, May, and July. Qinghai spruce showed increased sensitivity to total precipitation in March, May, and July after the temperature abruptly increased; Chinese pine exhibited a more consistent response to climatic factors and was more severely affected by drought stress. The growth of Qinghai spruce increased significantly with fluctuations at the end of the twentieth century, while the growth of Chinese pine first increased and then showed a significant decreasing trend.

Different response of earlywood vessel features of Fraxinus mandshurica to rapid warming in warm-dry and cold-wet areas

Liangjun Zhu et al.

Summary: The anatomical features of xylem in Fraxinus mandshurica from warm-dry and cold-wet areas of northeast China show different responses to climate change, with warmer regions exhibiting wider rings and higher hydraulic efficiency. The tree species can adjust vessel density and proportion of earlywood vessels to cope with interannual climate change, with potential physiological implications for growth increase and range expansion in recent years. However, the risk of hydraulic failure may increase in warm-dry areas.

Summary: The study revealed that temperature and precipitation have varying effects on the radial growth of Pinus massoniana trees, showing differences across different regions; the latitude and climate conditions of different sites also play a role in the growth-climate relationship for this species.

The resilience of the carbon cycles of temperate coniferous and broadleaved forests to drought

Hojin Lee et al.

Summary: The study compared the resilience of evergreen Korean pine and deciduous oak forests to drought, finding that the pine forest became a net carbon source during the drought while the oak forest showed smaller changes. Although some recovery was seen in subsequent years, the issues caused by drought legacies were not fully resolved.
