Nanodelivery of essential oils as efficient tools against antimicrobial resistance: a review of the type and physical-chemical properties of the delivery systems and applications

Victoria Dupuis et al.

Summary: This review provides a synthesis of the last ten years of research on nanodelivery systems for essential oils (EOs) and their potential as an alternative to antibiotics in human and veterinary therapy. Nanodelivery systems seem to be able to overcome the limitations of using essential oils alone. The choice of essential oil and nanodelivery system influences therapeutic efficacy. The review assesses the characteristics of nanomaterials used for essential oil delivery and their impact on functionality, as well as successful applications. More quantitative and in vivo studies are needed before the adoption of EOs loaded NPs as an alternative to antibiotics.

Folic acid ameliorates alcohol-induced liver injury via gut-liver axis homeostasis

Huaqi Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, it was found that folic acid supplementation could ameliorate alcohol-induced liver injury to some extent by regulating the gut-liver axis homeostasis. Folic acid improved lipid deposition and inflammation in the liver caused by alcohol consumption and regulated alterations in gut microbiota. However, folic acid did not completely eliminate alcohol-induced intestine and liver injury.

Fabrication and characterization of Pickering emulsion gels stabilized by zein/pullulan complex colloidal particles

Qian Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, zein/pullulan complex particles (ZPPs) were formulated to fabricate Pickering emulsions. The addition of pullulan increased particle size, decreased zeta potential, and improved the resistance to gravitational separation of zein. ZPPs modified the hydrophobicity of zein and allowed for the preparation of stable Pickering emulsions with nearly neutral wettability at a specific mass ratio.
