Can oligomeric proanthocyanidins interfere with UHPLC analysis of spermidine in nutritional supplements?

Sabrina P. K. van den Oever et al.

Summary: The impact of oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPC) on the analysis of spermidine using UHPLC was investigated. The results showed that OPC-containing extracts significantly reduced the detection of spermidine, and the binding between OPC and spermidine was influenced by different food matrices.

Chemometric Differentiation of Sole and Plaice Fish Fillets Using Three Near-Infrared Instruments

Nicola Cavallini et al.

Summary: Fish species substitution is a common form of fraud worldwide, and the development of reliable detection tools is crucial. This study focused on distinguishing between two similar flatfish species using near-infrared spectroscopy. The results showed that all three instruments provided accurate classification results, suggesting their potential application in real-world marketplaces and official control plans.

Discrimination between Wild and Farmed Sea Bass by Using New Spectrometry and Spectroscopy Methods

Giovanna Esposito et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the capabilities of Near-InfraRed (NIR) spectroscopy and mass spectrometry in discriminating sea bass according to the production method. The results showed that a Direct Sample Analysis (DSA) system integrated with a time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometer can accurately discriminate between the two types of fish based on fatty acid ratios. Additionally, portable NIR was able to classify fish production through multivariate analysis. These findings highlight the potential application of these two easy, fast, and accurate screening methods in detecting fraud in commercial sea bass production.

Post-mortem quality changes of common carp (Cyprinus carpio) during chilled storage from two culture systems

Ruoyi Hao et al.

Summary: The study showed that there are minor differences between post-mortem quality changes of normal common carps (NCC) and Omega-3 common carp (OCC) raised in patented culture systems. While both types had similar rigor mortis patterns, OCC exhibited lower indices values and different levels of certain compounds compared to NCC during storage.

Evaluation of Portable Sensor and Spectroscopic Devices for Seafood Decomposition Determination

Betsy Jean Yakes et al.

Summary: This study investigated the suitability of four portable devices for analyzing the freshness of two imported fish species, and found that as more diversity was added into the models, the instruments lost the ability to correctly identify fresh from spoiled fish. More research and technology innovations are necessary before these instruments can be deployed to industries and regulatory agencies.

Fast and Green Method to Control Frauds of Geographical Origin in Traded Cuttlefish Using a Portable Infrared Reflective Instrument

Sarah Curro et al.

Summary: This study utilized near infrared reflectance spectroscopy to assess the origin of cuttlefish, collected from five different fishing areas. The results suggest that NIRS is a rapid, green, and non-destructive method for authenticating the geographical origin of cuttlefish and preventing fraudulent activities. The SVM algorithm showed the best performance for geographical classification of cuttlefish.
