Dynamic Transcriptome Changes Driven by the Mutation of OsCOP1 Underlie Flavonoid Biosynthesis and Embryogenesis in the Developing Rice Seed

Backki Kim et al.

Summary: CONSTITUTIVE PHOTOMORPHOGENIC 1 (COP1), an E3 ubiquitin ligase, regulates flavonoid biosynthesis and embryogenesis in rice seeds through the expression changes of related genes. The expression of AP2-EREBP, MYB, and bZIP transcription factors (TFs) is upregulated, while that of HB, bHLH, and ABI3VP1 TFs is downregulated in the cop1 mutant. Additionally, genes involved in C-glycosyl flavone biosynthesis are activated, while anthocyanin biosynthesis genes remain unchanged. These findings indicate the crucial role of OsCOP1 in regulating flavonoid biosynthesis and embryo development in rice seeds through the modulation of light signal transduction-related genes.

OsCOP1 regulates embryo development and flavonoid biosynthesis in rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Backki Kim et al.

Summary: Novel mutations in OsCOP1 were found to be responsible for yellow pericarp and embryo lethal phenotype in rice seeds, demonstrating its crucial role in flavonoid biosynthesis and embryogenesis. Mutants exhibited abnormal embryo development, decreased grain size and weight, and increased flavonoid accumulation. This study sheds light on the functional roles of OsCOP1 in early embryogenesis and flavonoid biosynthesis in rice seeds.
