Cold Plasma-Assisted Microwave Pretreatment on Essential Oil Extraction from Betel Leaves: Process Optimization and Its Quality

Sangeetha Karunanithi et al.

Summary: The impact of cold plasma-assisted microwave treatment (CPAMW) on betel leaves powder essential oil (BLP-EO) extraction was investigated, and the process was optimized. CPAMW resulted in increased extraction yield and total phenolic content (TPC) of BLP-EO, with minor changes in physical properties and functional groups. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis revealed the presence of various compounds associated with biological activities and industrial applications in the optimized CPAMW-BLP-EO.

Amorphous silica-alumina as robust support for catalytic dehydrogenation of propane: Effect of Si/Al ratio on nature and dispersion of Cr active sites

Hamid Karami et al.

Summary: The effect of Si/Al ratios on the catalytic performance of chromium catalysts in propane dehydrogenation was studied. It was found that ASA with Si/Al ratios of 0.1 and 0.01 showed the highest propane conversion rate, attributed to the reduction of surface monochromate Cr6+ species, which act as the precursor of coordinatively unsaturated active sites. However, an increase in Si/Al ratio to 1 and 3 restricted the access of reactants to active Cr species due to the decrease in chromium reduction and increase in α-Cr2O3.

Effect of binder on CO2, CH4, and N2 adsorption behavior, structural properties, and diffusion coefficients on extruded zeolite 13X

Amir Mohammad Najafi et al.

Summary: The effect of inorganic binder-based extrusion on zeolite 13X for the selective adsorption of CO2, CH4, and N2 was studied. The addition of binders reduced the BET surface area and pore volume of the zeolite, indicating partial pore blockage. Silica was found to be the most suitable binder for CO2 capture in terms of selectivity, mechanical stability, and diffusion coefficients.

Acid gas preparation for enhanced oil recovery: techno-economic analysis of different dehydration processes

Hasan Nikkhah et al.

Summary: The natural gas treatment plant is a significant source of CO2 emissions, which can be mitigated by injecting CO2 into wells for enhanced oil recovery. However, the high water content in acid gas poses a challenge as it can convert to hydrate in pipelines. In this article, two different processes (solvent extraction, stripping gas) using two different solvents (MEG, TEG) were simulated in Aspen HYSYS. The stripping gas method proved to be more efficient, consuming 31.8% and 56.8% less energy than solvent extraction for MEG and TEG solvents, respectively. Furthermore, using MEG as a solvent in the stripping gas method resulted in a safer operation region based on hydrate formation analysis. The economic evaluation also showed that the stripping gas method reduces the total annual cost by 22.2% compared to solvent extraction.

Process design and technoeconomic analysis for zero liquid discharge desalination via LiBr absorption chiller integrated HDH-MEE-MVR system

Hasan Nikkhah et al.

Summary: A novel seawater desalination process is proposed, integrating a LiBr absorption chiller, HDH, multi-effect evaporator, and MVR to improve energy effectiveness. The process preheats seawater using LiBr absorption chiller and generates steam in multi-effect evaporators, while MVR system activates LiBr cycle. HDH integration allows for water recovery and brine effluent concentration for zero discharge processing.

Modeling and optimization of the extraction of ylang-ylang essential oils using surrogate models from simulated data, coupled with covariance matrix adaptation evolution strategy

Alexander P. Espinoza-Vasquez et al.

Summary: In this study, a simulation model validated with experimental data was used to generate surrogate models coupled with an optimization algorithm to minimize the duty in the steam batch distillation column and maximize the extraction yield. Economic analysis showed that the optimized case increased the profit compared to the base case by 9.43%, indicating that this research provides a reliable operational envelope for the extraction process that can be used for process design, monitoring, and optimization, potentially applying to other unit operations in the food industry.

Enhancing the CO2, CH4, and N2 adsorption and kinetic performance on FAU zeolites for CO2 capture from flue gas by metal incorporation technique

Amir Mohammad Najafi et al.

Summary: By utilizing a novel post-synthesis modification method, various metals were successfully incorporated into the structure of faujasite zeolites, resulting in improved CO2 adsorption capacity and selectivity. The impact of metal-doping on properties such as structure, adsorption capacity, selectivity, and diffusion coefficients was extensively studied. The findings demonstrated that the incorporation of potassium metal into faujasite zeolites showed great potential for the separation of CO2 from flue gas and natural gas streams.
