Meat food fraud risk in Chinese markets 2012-2021

Xiaoman Li et al.

Summary: Food fraud, particularly in meat products, is a global concern. China has witnessed numerous incidences of meat adulteration or fraud in the past decade. This study compiled a meat food fraud risk database using data from official circular information and media reports in China from 2012 to 2021. The findings provide valuable insights into fraud types, regional distribution, adulterants, and categories involved in meat food fraud incidents, and can facilitate more efficient detection, rapid screening, prevention, and regulation of adulteration in the meat supply chain markets.

Authentication of meat and meat products using molecular assays: A review

Md Abul Kalam Azad et al.

Summary: Meat species identification and animal authentication in meat products is an important topic for fair trade and religious concerns. Protein or DNA measurements are commonly used, but traditional approaches are ineffective. Molecular techniques for meat species identification have gained interest due to their high sensitivity, specificity, processing efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. This review provides an overview of the most common DNA and PCR-based approaches used for meat and meat product authentication.

Application of biosensors for detection of meat species: A short review

Jose M. R. Flauzino et al.

Summary: Biosensors have made significant advances in the meat industry, particularly in pathogen detection and freshness analysis. They are also being used to detect adulteration in meat by different animal species. However, the majority of studies focus on optical biosensors, with pork being the most commonly detected species. These devices often require extensive purification and amplification steps, making them unsuitable for point-of-need use. More robust devices are needed to be developed for use at any stage of the meat industrial chain.

Rapid Detection of Porcine DNA in Meatball Using Recombinase Polymerase Amplification Couple with Lateral Flow Immunoassay for Halal Authentication

Mohd Hazim Mohd Yusop et al.

Summary: Point-of-care diagnostic methods for animal species determination are crucial for food labelling enforcement. A new method using recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) and nucleic acid lateral flow immunoassay (NALFIA) for porcine DNA detection was developed. The method showed high sensitivity and specificity, and has the potential to be a rapid and sensitive tool for detecting porcine DNA in meat-based products.

CRISPR-based systems for sensitive and rapid on-site COVID-19 diagnostics

Jun Hui Soh et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has posed challenges to healthcare systems, and sensitive, specific, and timely diagnosis is crucial. While RT-PCR is highly sensitive and specific, it is not accessible to resource-limited areas. Antigen rapid tests enable on-site testing but are less sensitive and specific. CRISPR-Cas systems, with isothermal amplification and dip-stick readout, offer sensitive and specific on-site testing, but further improvements are needed for clinical adoption.

Simultaneous and accurate visual identification of chicken, duck and pork components with the molecular amplification integrated lateral flow strip

Panzhu Qin et al.

Summary: This study proposes a visual strategy for simultaneous detection of multiple adulterated components in beef by integrating mPCR with LFS. The method showed comparable sensitivity to qPCR but with simpler operations and lower costs, making it a useful candidate for meat quality control in resource-limited setups.
