Identification of phosphodiesterase type-5 (PDE-5) inhibitors in herbal supplements using a tiered approach and associated consumer risk

Felicia Akuamoa et al.

Summary: The use of herbal supplements for improved sexual performance is popular in Ghana, but the high rate of adulteration compromises their safety. A study analyzed 40 herbal supplements and found significant amounts of sildenafil, vardenafil, and tadalafil in many of them. The study highlights the importance of a tiered approach combining bioassays and chemical analysis to identify unknown bioactive compounds.

Comparative Risk Assessment of Three Native Heliotropium Species in Israel

Jakob A. Shimshoni et al.

Summary: The study utilized the concept of iREP to determine the PA profile of major organ parts of Heliotropium species, assessing their relative toxic potential. It was found that H. europaeum posed a higher risk to mammals compared to H. rotundifolium, while no differences were found between H. europaeum and H. suaveolens or between H. suaveolens and H. rotundifolium.

PDE-5 inhibitors in selected herbal supplements from the Ghanaian market for better erectile function as tested by a bioassay

Felicia Akuamoa et al.

Summary: Herbal supplements sold in the markets of Accra, Ghana as "all natural" and claimed to treat erectile dysfunction were found to contain high levels of PDE-5 inhibitors, potentially posing severe health risks as doses exceeded recommended daily intake levels. Further investigation is needed to determine if the observed effects are due to inherent plant constituents or synthetic additives.
