A review on CFD simulation of biomass pyrolysis in fluidized bed reactors with emphasis on particle-scale models

Hao Luo et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the recent advances in multi-scale computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of biomass pyrolysis in fluidized bed reactors. The interconnection among molecular-scale, particle-scale, CFD cell-scale, and reactor-scale are discussed, along with the frameworks of Eulerian-Lagrangian (E-L) and Eulerian multi-fluid model (MFM). The theoretical basis and practical applications of particle-scale models, as well as their coupling with CFD cell-scale and molecular-scale models, are highlighted. The future work to develop reliable and efficient CFD models for simulating biomass pyrolysis in fluidized bed reactors is outlined.

Numerical investigation on the heat transfer of plastic waste pyrolysis in a rotary furnace

Meng Zhang et al.

Summary: This study utilized a combination of discrete element model and computational fluid model to investigate the effects of heat carrier loading and furnace rolling speed on the pyrolysis of waste plastics in a rotary furnace. The simulation results showed that higher heat carrier loading increased the translational and angular velocity of plastic particles, leading to faster heating rates and longer residence times of pyrolysis volatiles in the furnace. However, the increase in furnace rolling speed only slightly affected the heat transfer efficiency, consistent with minimal changes in pyrolysis product observed in previous experiments. The CFD-DEM simulation offered valuable insights into particle movement, heat transfer, and volatile residence time, providing a useful tool for process optimization based on experimental observations.

Quantifying the errors of the particle-source-in-cell Euler-Lagrange method

Fabien Evrard et al.

Summary: The PSIC-EL method is commonly used to simulate particle-laden flows, but its accuracy decreases as the ratio of particle diameter to mesh spacing increases. This paper provides an expression to estimate flow velocity disturbance based on the ratio of d(p) to h, which is crucial for predicting errors in particle motion. The upper bound of relative error in estimating undisturbed velocity is approximately (6/5)d(p)/h, and the provided expression accurately estimates errors for particle Reynolds numbers relevant to most gas-solid flow applications.
