In vitro fermentation of Gracilaria lemaneiformis and its sulfated polysaccharides by rabbitfish gut microbes

Md. Akibul Hasan Bakky et al.

Summary: This study characterized the polysaccharide from Gracilaria lemaneiformis and investigated its fermentation by rabbitfish intestinal microbes. The study found that the polysaccharide was mainly composed of galactose and anhydrogalactose, and it enhanced the production of short-chain fatty acids and altered the gut microbiota. The findings suggest that the polysaccharide has prebiotic potential and could be used as a functional feed additive in aquaculture.

Health benefits and potential applications of fucoidan (FCD) extracted from brown seaweeds in aquaculture: An updated review

Hany M. R. Abdel-Latif et al.

Summary: Due to the high incidence of fish and shrimp diseases, the use of immunomodulators in aquaculture has become a pressing need. This literature review focuses on the application of fucoidan (FCD), a bioactive sulfated polysaccharide found in brown seaweeds, in aquaculture. Studies have shown that FCD has beneficial effects on the growth, intestinal health, antioxidant capacity, and immune responses of various finfish and shellfish species. It also shows potential in modulating toxicity signs and increasing the resistance of fish and shrimp against bacterial and viral infections.

Xiaoshan Long et al.

Summary: The aim of this research was to investigate the antioxidant activity and underlying mechanism of Gracilaria lemaneiformis polysaccharide degradation in HepG2 cells. The results showed that the degraded polysaccharide had a higher scavenging ability for free radicals. Additionally, the polysaccharide relieved oxidative stress in the cells by modulating the Nrf-2/Keap-1 signaling pathway.

The Microbial Composition of Penaeid Shrimps' Hepatopancreas Is Modulated by Hemocyanin

Zhihong Zheng et al.

Summary: This study reveals the pivotal role of the respiratory glycoprotein hemocyanin in modulating microbial composition and diversity in the hepatopancreas of penaeid shrimp. Depletion of hemocyanin in shrimp leads to dysregulated microbial composition, mitochondrial depolarization, and increased reactive oxygen species levels. Hemocyanin silencing combined with ROS scavenger treatment can improve microbial diversity and decrease Vibrio dominance in the hepatopancreas.
