A High-Impedance Fault Detection Method for Distribution Systems Based on Empirical Wavelet Transform and Differential Faulty Energy

Jie Gao et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the features of high-impedance faults and proposes a detection method that uses empirical wavelet transform and differential faulty energy. The method decomposes the differential faulty energy into various time-frequency components and selects the feature component with the largest permutation entropy. The permutation variance index is then constructed based on sample point number and feature component energy to detect high-impedance faults.

Development of Time-Frequency Based Approach to Detect High Impedance Fault in an Inverter Interfaced Distribution System

M. Biswal et al.

Summary: The majority of high impedance faults occur through the ground with a high false detection rate due to nonlinear fault signal variations. Signal decomposition techniques are best suited for detecting high frequency components in faults. In an active distribution system, detecting and discriminating HIF from capacitor switching, nonlinear switching, and transformer energization is challenging. The newly developed HIF detection method based on Intrinsic Time Decomposition and Teager Kaiser Energy Operator (TKEO) shows high noise immunity and does not rely on high current magnitude for fault detection, with performance verified in several test cases.
