Barriers and drivers for industrial energy management: The frontline perspective

Kelly M. Smith et al.

Summary: Implementing energy efficiency measures is considered a high priority in carbon dioxide emission reduction and industry competitiveness. However, around 50% of cost-effective energy efficiency measures are never implemented, resulting in an energy efficiency gap attributed to barriers. This study compares the perspectives of frontline workers and managers to identify barriers and drivers for industrial energy efficiency. Analysis of survey responses reveals differences in perceived barriers and drivers between frontline workers and managers. New taxonomies for barriers and drivers are proposed to incorporate a more complete understanding from both perspectives. This research provides valuable insights for industry to address challenges, contribute to policy creation, and close the energy efficiency gap.
