Endobronchial Valve Treatment of Tuberculous Cavities in Patients with Multidrug-Resistant Pulmonary Tuberculosis: A Randomized Clinical Study

Huiru An et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the clinical efficacy and safety of endobronchial valves (EBVs) for the treatment of cavities in multidrug-resistant pulmonary tuberculosis (MDR-PTB) patients. The results showed that EBV implantation led to a reduction in lung cavity size, with a 100% sputum culture conversion rate and a cavity closure rate of 68.8%. Age, disease course, and lung lobe location did not significantly affect the treatment outcome, but the cavity closure rate was higher in women.

Endobronchial Valves for the Treatment of Advanced Emphysema

Karin Klooster et al.

Summary: Bronchoscopic lung volume reduction with one-way endobronchial valves is a recommended treatment option for patients with advanced emphysema, requiring detailed patient selection, professional treatment performance, and dedicated follow-up. A multidisciplinary approach and extensive knowledge of COPD are crucial for the success of this treatment.

New bronchoscopic treatment modalities for patients with chronic bronchitis

Jorine E. Hartman et al.

Summary: Chronic bronchitis is a challenging disease to treat, and innovative bronchoscopic treatments are being investigated to target hyperplastic goblet cells and excess submucous glands. These therapies, such as liquid nitrogen metered cryospray, bronchial rheoplasty, balloon desobstruction, and targeted lung denervation, are in different stages of clinical research and more data is needed to confirm their effectiveness.

Crosslink bio-adhesives for bronchoscopic lung volume reduction: current status and future direction

Mugdha M. Joglekar et al.

Summary: Lung bio-adhesives are a promising new BLVR treatment option, but the current adhesive technology has major drawbacks including severe inflammatory responses and adverse events. Various natural, semi-synthetic, and synthetic tissue haemostats and sealants have been used for pulmonary applications, with different materials such as AeriSeal and autologous blood having their own advantages and drawbacks. The ideal lung bio-adhesive material should possess key biological and biomechanical characteristics to overcome concerns related to current adhesives.

Summary: Revision bronchoscopies after endobronchial valve treatment are useful procedures that lead to improved treatment outcomes for most patients. Granulation tissue formation causing valve dysfunction is the most common underlying cause of longer term issues.
