Summary: In addition to vaccines, the World Health Organization recognizes the urgency of developing novel medications to combat COVID-19. A machine learning supported web tool called GuiltyTargets-COVID-19 has been developed to identify new candidate drug targets. This tool can prioritize target candidates, assess their druggability, unravel their connection to disease mechanisms, map ligands to targets, and identify potential side effects. Through analyzing RNA-Seq datasets, GuiltyTargets-COVID-19 has identified 4 potential drug targets for COVID-19. Overall, this web tool will facilitate target identification and drug development for COVID-19 in a cell type and tissue specific manner.

Summary: COVID-19 has led to a large number of infections and deaths globally, causing severe disruptions to societies and economies. Extensive experimental and computational research efforts have been made to quickly develop diagnostics, vaccines, and drugs to combat the pandemic. Although drug repurposing has not provided rapid and global solutions, known drugs have been used in clinical settings and new clinical candidates are being considered in trials. Truly impactful computational tools that provide testable hypotheses and rapid sharing of research results are crucial for the development of much-needed therapeutics for COVID-19.
