Aspect ratio and the dynamic wake of the Ahmed body

James Venning et al.

Summary: The study investigated the dynamic structures in the wake of the Ahmed body with a 25 degrees slant angle, revealing that the flow over the slant back is dominated by two C-pillar vortex structures and that modifying the body width can alter the influence of these vortices on the flow. Moreover, changing the width of the body also changes the characteristics of the spanwise vortical structures formed behind the base of the model.

Large-scale 3D-PTV measurement of Ahmed-body wake in crossflow

Adriaan Booysen et al.

Summary: The study revealed that increasing the yaw angle on the Ahmed body alters the wake characteristics, shifting the separation bubble towards the windward side and enlarging the recirculating region on the leeward side. With Euler-Lagrangian flow measurements, a vortex ring was observed forming around the mean separation bubble.

Experimental Study of the Skin-Friction Topology Around the Ahmed Body in Cross-Wind Conditions

The Hung Tran et al.

Summary: This study experimentally measured the skin friction around a 1/2-scale Ahmed body under different cross-wind conditions. The results showed that the flow on the slant surface was not significantly affected by the cross-wind condition for yaw angles below 3 deg, but was highly affected for yaw angles above 3 deg, leading to a dramatic increase in the drag of the model.

Wall shear-stress extraction by an optical flow algorithm with a sub-grid formulation

The Hung Tran et al.

Summary: The study introduces a novel optical-flow algorithm for determining wall shear-stress on object surfaces, recovering local features neglected by smoothing filters, and extracting global shear-stress fields with a variational formulation. When applied to scalar images generated by direct numerical simulation, the algorithm demonstrates smaller errors compared to conventional methods. The proposed method reveals more local features of separation lines and singular points on object surfaces than previous studies.

Recent Advances in Wake Dynamics and Active Drag Reduction of Simple Automotive Bodies

Zhou Yu et al.

Summary: This article summarizes recent progress in wake dynamics and active drag reduction in three-dimensional simple automotive models, with a focus on the generic Ahmed body. It discusses the pressure distribution, instabilities, and flow structures of high-drag, low-drag, and square-back bodies, as well as the performance and efficiency of various drag reduction methods. Comments are also provided on areas that warrant more attention and future investigation.

Flow structure around a low-drag Ahmed body

K. Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the predominant coherent structures around an Ahmed body in the low-drag regime, identifying five distinct Strouhal numbers in the wake and discussing the formation mechanism and dynamical role of a corner vortex. The research also documents the Reynolds-number effect on the flow and proposes a conceptual flow structure model for a low-drag Ahmed body based on the data collected.

Aerodynamic performance of several passive vortex generator configurations on an Ahmed body subjected to yaw angles

H. Viswanathan

Summary: The study evaluates the aerodynamic performance of several passive vortex generators (VGs) placed on a standard Ahmed body using RANS-based models, showing that the introduction of certain VGs can reduce drag. Rigorous validation is performed with experimental data, demonstrating good agreement with different VG types. The cylindrical and delta-winglet VGs perform well for yawing angles less than or equal to 8 degrees, while the trapezoidal VGs may worsen performance.

Comparative study of mass transfer distributions and oil-flow visualizations with image analysis on long and short 90° elbows

Nobuyuki Fujisawa et al.

Summary: A comparative study of mass transfer measurements and oil-flow visualization with image analysis was conducted for long and short 90 degrees elbows at Reynolds numbers ranging from 5 x 10^4 to 2 x 10^5. The mass transfer distributions showed variations along the elbow walls, with increases in both the center wall of the long elbow and the downstream of the short elbow at sub-critical Reynolds numbers. Oil-flow visualizations indicated low oil-flow velocities on the center wall of the long elbow and flow separation downstream of the short elbow at sub-critical Reynolds numbers, which were suppressed and became independent of the elbow curvature at post-critical Reynolds numbers.

Summary: This paper discusses the application of various methodologies to determine skin-friction fields from surface temperature maps and analyze the complex flow evolution on a lifting hydrofoil immersed in a non-uniform, unsteady wake induced by a marine propeller. The temperature-sensitive paint technique allows for high-resolution global temperature data.
