Acute catabolic bone metabolism response to exercise in young and older adults: A narrative review

Sarah J. Wherry et al.

Summary: Exercise is recommended for cardiometabolic benefits and bone health, but may lead to bone loss in certain conditions. Disruption in calcium homeostasis during exercise could diminish skeletal benefits and factors such as age, sex, and exercise intensity may influence the magnitude of this disruption.

Association of Co-Living and Age on the Type of Sports Practiced by Older People

Maria Antonia Parra-Rizo et al.

Summary: This study assessed the association between types of co-living and the age and sports activities of physically active elderly individuals. It was found that older people who practice gymnastics tend to live alone, while those who engage in aquatic activities are generally younger. This suggests that different types of co-living may be related to the sports preferences and age of older adults.

Exploring the association between handgrip, lower limb muscle strength, and physical function in older adults: A narrative review

Toni Tatangelo et al.

Summary: Handgrip strength is a widely used and convenient tool for assessing muscle and physical function. However, there is controversy regarding its use for evaluating overall muscle function, especially in the lower limbs. Lower limb muscle strength and physical performance decline with age, but it is challenging to quantify this decline in routine settings. This review explores the association between handgrip strength, lower limb muscle strength, and physical performance in older adults, and provides directions for future research.

Evaluation of the Effectiveness of Outdoor Fitness Equipment Intervention in Achieving Fitness Goals for Seniors

Hsueh-Wen Chow et al.

Summary: This study designed an outdoor fitness equipment (OFE) training protocol incorporating four modalities of physical activity (PA) for seniors to achieve target fitness goals and improve cardiorespiratory endurance. However, the effectiveness of resistance/flexibility/balance interventions remains inconclusive, highlighting the need for more studies to carefully assess the use of OFE.

Effectiveness of Outdoor Exercise Parks on Health Outcomes in Older Adults-A Mixed-Methods Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Yoke Leng Ng et al.

Summary: This systematic review examined the impact of outdoor exercise equipment on physical activity levels and quality of life in older adults in the community. The study found varied results in terms of study quality and effectiveness, and was inconclusive on whether exercise parks are effective in improving physical activity levels. Older adults value health and social benefits from using exercise parks, but caution is advised due to small sample sizes and limited studies.

Understanding the impact of the installation of outdoor fitness equipment and a multi-sports court on park visitation and park-based physical activity: A natural experiment

Jenny Veitch et al.

Summary: The study found that the installation of outdoor fitness equipment and a multi-sports court in a Melbourne park did not have a significant impact on park visitation and park-based physical activity, despite an increase in total visitor counts and park visitors engaging in MVPA. Common facilitators for adult park visitors using the facilities included having someone to use them with and instructional signage, while common barriers included poor weather and lack of time. Further research is needed to better understand the appeal of outdoor fitness equipment and multi-sports courts among different population segments.
