Critical conditions for liquid chromatography of statistical polyolefins: Evaluation of diene distribution in EPDM terpolymers

Subrajeet Deshmukh et al.

Summary: Liquid chromatography at critical conditions can uncover molecular information on macromolecular structures that cannot be obtained by other analytical techniques. This study identified critical conditions for statistical ethylene propylene copolymers by varying the composition of the binary mobile phase at a constant temperature and modulating the adsorption-desorption temperature at a constant mobile phase composition. A novel chromatographic approach using structure retention relationships and Hansen Solubility Parameters was employed to identify solvents. The study provided experimental evidence for the existence of critical conditions for polyolefin random copolymers, and the molecular information obtained can be utilized for engineering complex polymers for future applications.

Summary: Polyolefins, despite being made from simple monomers, have complex molecular structures with variations in molar mass, chemical composition, and branching. Advanced analytical techniques, including method couplings, are necessary for comprehensive characterization of their molecular heterogeneity.

Improving temperature gradient interaction chromatography of polyolefins by simultaneous use of different stationary phases

Anthony Ndiripo et al.

Summary: Temperature gradient interaction chromatography (TGIC) at high temperatures is a powerful method for separating polyolefins based on crystallization and adsorption/desorption phenomena. Utilizing a non-adsorptive silica column for crystallization followed by an adsorptive PGC column allows for improved separation with independent control over crystallization and adsorption processes.

Connecting the complex microstructure of LDPE to its rheology and processing properties via a combined fractionation and modelling approach

Kristina Maria Zentel et al.

Summary: This study fractionated well-defined mini-plant low density polyethylene samples preparatively and characterized their rheology properties. The impact of molecular weight and long chain branching on different fractions was observed in rheology measurements. The experimental trends were consistent with the model predictions, showing an acceptable overall agreement between the two approaches.

Linking molecular structure to plant conditions: advanced analysis of a systematic set of mini-plant scale low density polyethylenes

Kristina Maria Zentel et al.

Summary: Two sample sets of low density polyethylene (LDPE) were differentiated based on comprehensive microstructure analysis, focusing on short- and long-chain branching. Fractionation techniques successfully separated the materials according to crystallizability and molecular weight, providing insights into the complex microstructure of LDPE and its connection to process conditions.

Fractionation of chain walking polyethylene and elucidation of branching, conformation and molar mass distributions

Laura Plueschke et al.

Summary: In this study, novel chain-walking polyethylenes (CWPE) are fractionated using preparative molar mass fractionation (pMMF) to analyze the branching topology. IC in temperature and solvent gradient modes (TGIC, SGIC) are used to separate the pMMF fractions based on branching topology. Detailed branching analysis is conducted using nuclear magnetic resonance, and comprehensive bivariate correlations between MM and molecular topology are provided by two-dimensional liquid chromatography (LC) hyphenating IC and SEC.
