Chitosan Edible Films and Coatings with Added Bioactive Compounds: Antibacterial and Antioxidant Properties and Their Application to Food Products: A Review

Nuria Munoz-Tebar et al.

Summary: Chitosan, a deacetylated form of chitin, is gaining attention in the food industry due to its properties, and is often used alone or in combination with bioactive substances to produce biodegradable films and coatings. Plant extracts have been incorporated to enhance the antimicrobial and antioxidant properties of chitosan, meeting consumer demands for environmentally friendly and preservative-free foods. This review provides knowledge about chitosan films and coatings enriched with natural extracts, their applications in food products, and their effects. It has been shown that chitosan has excellent antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, as well as biodegradability, biocompatibility, and non-toxicity as a coating or packaging material. However, further research is needed to expand the applications of bioactive chitosan coatings to more foods and industries, and to scale up their production to minimize the use of plastic materials.

Application of carboxymethyl chitosan-based coating in fresh-cut apple preservation: Incorporation of guava leaf flavonoids and their noncovalent interaction study

Jingyi Wang et al.

Summary: Carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) combined with flavonoids from guava leaves (GLF) was found to have a positive effect on the refrigeration of fresh-cut apples for preservation. The CMCS-GLF coating improved the quality, nutritional value, and microbial safety of the apples during storage. The interaction between CMCS and GLF modified the physiochemical properties of CMCS, resulting in better bioactivity and application value in fresh fruit preservation.

Release of Encapsulated Bioactive Compounds from Active Packaging/Coating Materials and Its Modeling: A Systematic Review

Shahida Anusha Siddiqui et al.

Summary: This paper systematically analyzes the identification of original articles using Scopus and Google Scholar on active packaging as a novel technology for controlling the release of antimicrobial agents in food packaging systems. The encapsulation of bioactives enhances their bioavailability and stability, and mathematical models play an important role in understanding and predicting their release behavior during transportation and storage. However, few studies have formulated parameters for mathematical models to achieve specific release mechanisms for the quality and safety of foods.

Functional Nanocellulose, Alginate and Chitosan Nanocomposites Designed as Active Film Packaging Materials

Gregor Lavric et al.

Summary: The study found that polysaccharide-based films with added CNC are the most suitable for packaging purposes, and better dispersal of nanocellulose in chitosan than in alginate was observed. By adding CNC, the hydrophobicity of chitosan and alginate films increased, and chitosan with 3% CNC showed the highest contact angle and 15% lower moisture absorption compared to pure chitosan.
