Polyamide (PA)- and Polyimide (PI)-based membranes for desalination application

Yash Avinash Ghodke et al.

Summary: In recent years, the use of membrane desalination techniques for water purification has grown significantly due to water scarcity in certain parts of the world. This review focuses on enhancing the properties of Polyamide (PA) and Polyimide (PI) membranes by incorporating additives such as Silver nanoparticles, Copper nanoparticles, Graphene oxide, Singlewalled carbon nanotube, and multi-walled carbon nanotube. These additives improve important membrane properties like antifouling, biofouling, water flux, selectivity, permeability, hydrophilicity, and hydrophobicity. The addition of these additives to the Polyimide/Polyamide coat or membrane can be done using interfacial polymerization or phase inversion. Reverse osmosis and electrodialysis techniques can be used for membrane filtration. A thin-film composite membrane consisting of PA and MWCNTs demonstrates excellent hydrophilicity and high water flux with a salt rejection rate of 98.1%.

Advanced polymer-based materials and mesoscale models to enhance the performance of multifunctional supercapacitors

Nishant Gaikwad et al.

Summary: The rapidly growing need for a stable electric supply has led to energy crises caused by inconsistent renewable and inadequate non-renewable energy sources. This emphasizes the importance of reliable hybrid energy storage systems that combine contrasting electrical characteristics and provide sustained electrochemical performance. Supercapacitors, particularly those utilizing polymer nanocomposites, show great potential in surpassing traditional energy storage systems by offering significantly higher power densities and longer life cycles. This review extensively discusses the potential of complex polymer nanocomposites as electrodes and electrolytes to achieve high energy density supercapacitors, as well as the use of continuum level approaches to understand the influence of electrode and electrolyte morphologies on supercapacitor performance.

Exploring the future of 2D catalysts for clean and sustainable hydrogen production

Bhavana Shanmughan et al.

Summary: In order to address climate change and the global energy crisis, hydrogen is considered as a sustainable and eco-friendly energy carrier that can replace fossil fuels. The production and use of hydrogen as an energy carrier can deliver or store a large amount of energy. The Paris Agreement has been approved by 194 Parties, committing to achieve zero emissions targets globally to combat climate change. Increasing the production of green hydrogen from renewable energy sources can minimize the harm to the environment. Various techniques, such as photolysis, thermolysis, and electrolysis, can be used to synthesize sustainable hydrogen. Catalysts, especially 2D catalysts like graphene, can enhance efficiency and reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the environment. The global green hydrogen market is expected to reach USD 2565.7 million in 2028, with a 14% CAGR. This review focuses on the catalytic activity of 2D materials, such as MXene, graphene, and MOFs, with graphene found to be the most effective in hydrogen production.

Pamela Ramirez-Vidal et al.

Summary: The effect of graphene oxide (GO) addition on hyper-crosslinked polymers was studied, revealing that adding GO can reduce specific surface area but increase density, which is beneficial for practical applications. However, irreversible deformation was observed during hydrogen adsorption at pressures above 4 MPa, limiting their potential applications.

Recent Advances in Polybenzimidazole Membranes for Hydrogen Purification

Johannes H. Bitter et al.

Summary: In recent decades, hydrogen has gained renewed and growing interest worldwide as a high-quality and renewable energy carrier, thanks to advances in fuel cells and increasing environmental concerns. Steam reforming of fossil-based resources is currently the main method for hydrogen production, but it generates large amounts of greenhouse gases including CO2, which must be captured to fully exploit the potential of hydrogen. Membrane separation technology has seen significant growth, breakthroughs, and advancements, and it could be the key component in achieving inexpensive and highly pure hydrogen. Polybenzimidazole (PBI)-based membranes have shown excellent stability and selectivity, making them suitable for the development of industrially applicable hydrogen-selective membranes.

Interfacially-confined polyetherimide tubular membranes for H2, CO2 and N2 separations

Gholamreza Vahedi Sarrigani et al.

Summary: This study investigates the application of tubular polyetherimide (PEI) membranes prepared by dip-coating and multilayer assembly techniques in CO2 and H2 transport and CO2/N2 and H2/N2 selectivity. The results show that the permeability and selectivity of the membranes depend on the deposition cycle during dip-coating. For binary gas mixture separation, 100% CO2 and H2 purity is achieved regardless of the feed gas concentration. The PEI membrane exhibits interfacial confinement phenomenon, and the subtle change in imide group conformation contributes to increased polymer amorphicity and exclusive H2 and CO2 transport.

Impact of humidity on gas transport in polybenzimidazole membranes

Joshua D. Moon et al.

Summary: Polybenzimidazoles (PBIs) have promising potential for high temperature H-2/CO2 separation applications, but their gas separation properties are affected by humidity. Water uptake reduces PBI gas permeabilities at low humidities through competitive sorption and antiplasticization, while at high humidities, plasticization increases permeabilities of larger gases in more hydrophilic PBIs. Water plasticizes PBIs by enhancing molecular dynamics to increase accessible free volume rather than creating new free volume cavities.
