Organic nitrogen fertilization benefits selected soil fauna in global agroecosystems

Bibiana Betancur-Corredor et al.

Summary: Soil fauna plays a vital role in agricultural productivity. Nitrogen fertilization can have positive or negative effects on soil fauna. Organic nitrogen fertilization increases the density and biomass of certain soil fauna, while inorganic fertilization has neutral or negative effects on most groups. Additionally, the effects of nitrogen fertilization on soil fauna depend on application rate, soil texture, and climatic conditions.

Reducing tillage intensity benefits the soil micro- and mesofauna in a global meta-analysis

Bibiana Betancur-Corredor et al.

Summary: Soil fauna plays a crucial role in energy and nutrient cycling in agricultural systems, impacting crop quality and pest occurrence. Reducing tillage intensity or practicing no-tillage can increase the density of springtails, mites, and enchytraeids compared to more intense tillage methods. The effects of reduced tillage on soil micro- and mesofauna vary depending on nematode feeding groups, springtail life forms, mite suborders, as well as depth, climate, soil texture, tillage method, frequency, concurrent fertilization, and herbicide application. These findings have important implications for soil faunal community management and modeling efforts in global agroecosystems.

The role of Collembola for litter decomposition under minimum and conventional tillage

Joerg Hanisch et al.

Summary: This study investigates the role of Collembola in decomposition processes of crop residues in two different tillage systems. The results show that Collembola accelerates litter carbon loss and increases litter nitrogen accumulation in both conventional tillage and minimum tillage, contributing to the sustainable management of arable systems.

Role of different size classes of organisms in cropped soils: What do litterbag experiments tell us? A meta-analysis

Juliette Chassain et al.

Summary: Soil organisms play a crucial role in litter decomposition within agricultural systems, with both macrofauna and mesofauna significantly enhancing the process. However, the effects of these organisms are influenced by various factors, highlighting the need for a standardized protocol to measure their impact.

Organic farming promotes arthropod predators, but this depends on neighbouring patches of natural vegetation

Alistair D. Galloway et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that organic farming in perennial cropping systems like citrus orchards can enhance the diversity of arthropod predators. The increase in biodiversity is related to environmental variables, with remnant natural vegetation positively impacting the diversity of arthropod predators within conventional orchards.

Impact of farming systems on soil ecological quality: a meta-analysis

Amelie Christel et al.

Summary: The productivist model post World War II improved food production but negatively impacted soil ecology. Alternative farming systems like organic and biodynamic farming show higher soil ecological quality, while soil conservation farming needs further research. Organic fertilization and longer crop rotations are beneficial practices, while pesticides and soil tillage are detrimental.

Functional and Taxonomic Diversity of Collembola as Complementary Tools to Assess Land Use Effects on Soils Biodiversity

Sophie Joimel et al.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the effects of different land uses on collembolan functional and taxonomic biodiversity, with urban and industrial soils showing less functional diversity than taxonomic diversity, possibly due to functional homogenization commonly observed in urban ecosystems.
