Impact of iron supplementation on gestational diabetes mellitus: A literature review

Lulu Liu et al.

Summary: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a common complication of pregnancy, affecting 14% of pregnancies worldwide. The potential risk of iron supplementation in GDM needs to be clarified. In this review, we comprehensively assess the role of iron in pregnancy, including the necessity of iron supplementation and the mechanisms of excess iron contributing to the pathogenesis of GDM.

Iron Supplementation in Pregnancy and Risk of Gestational Diabetes: A Narrative Review

Clive J. Petry

Summary: Iron supplementation in pregnancy may increase the risk of gestational diabetes, particularly in women who are already iron-replete. However, current evidence on this topic is contradictory, and the magnitude of any increased risk appears relatively small, urging caution in interpreting the results.

Iron Salts, High Levels of Hemoglobin and Ferritin in Pregnancy, and Development of Gestational Diabetes: A Systematic Review

Vanessa Iribarrem Avena Miranda et al.

Summary: This study aimed to systematically review the literature on the association between the use of iron supplements, increased levels of hemoglobin and/or ferritin, and the risk of developing gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). After analyzing 9 studies, it was found that women with higher levels of hemoglobin or ferritin were more likely to develop GDM compared to those with lower levels. However, due to methodological problems, more studies of good methodological quality are needed to further establish the association between iron supplementation and GDM.

The Effect of Oxidative Stress and Antioxidant Therapies on Pancreatic β-cell Dysfunction: Results from in Vitro and in Vivo Studies

Ioanna A. Anastasiou et al.

Summary: Oxidative stress is implicated in many diseases, particularly in pancreatic beta-cell dysfunction and apoptosis associated with diabetes. Antioxidants, especially natural extracts, have shown protective effects on pancreatic beta-cells in vitro and in vivo, while evidence for the antioxidant effects of antidiabetic drugs is limited.

Hemoglobin concentration and iron supplement during pregnancy were associated with an increased risk of gestational diabetes mellitus

Shuting Si et al.

Summary: This study found that Hb levels during pregnancy were significantly associated with blood glucose levels and the risk of GDM. Pregnant women with Hb >= 11 g/dL and iron supplements had higher postprandial blood glucose levels and increased risks for GDM compared to those with lower Hb levels and without iron supplements.

Summary: This study found that higher plasma levels of iron and copper were significantly associated with an increased risk of GDM, while higher plasma levels of zinc and calcium were significantly associated with a decreased risk of GDM. Additionally, blood glucose levels act as a mediator between plasma trace element exposures and the risk of GDM.

Summary: This study found that periconceptional iron supplementation exceeding 30 mg/d for long-term use was associated with an increased risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), especially among primiparous participants without a family history of diabetes and iron-replete individuals. There were no significant differences in birth outcomes among different iron supplementation groups.

Summary: The study found that elevated plasma ferritin concentrations in the early second trimester and iron supplementation of >= 60 mg/d during pregnancy are independently associated with an increased risk of GDM. More clinical trials are needed to evaluate the benefits and risks of iron supplementation during pregnancy with precision nutrition approaches.
