Toxicity of repeated oral intake of organic selenium, inorganic selenium, and selenium nanoparticles: A review

Niels Hadrup et al.

Summary: To protect against toxicity of selenium at doses exceeding the necessary amount, it is important to determine the dose levels at which adverse effects occur. Different forms of selenium, both organic and inorganic, have been found to be toxic, with clinical signs including a garlicky-smelling breath, hair loss, and nail changes. Studies have shown that daily ingestion of 300 μg Se for 5 years resulted in increased mortality, corresponding to a lowest-observed-adverse-effect level (LOAEL) of -4.3 μg/kg bw/day and a corresponding no-observed-adverse-effect level (NOAEL) of -2.9 μg Se/kg bw/day.

The rationale for selenium supplementation in inflammatory bowel disease: A mechanism-based point of view

Moein Ala et al.

Summary: Selenium has anti-inflammatory properties and can attenuate oxidative stress, showing potential in treating ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. Selenium also supports protective gut microbiota, potentially improving management of IBD. Selenium supplementation may block certain tumorigenesis pathways, particularly beneficial for patients with selenium deficiency.
