Experiment study of basalt fiber/steel hybrid laminates under high-velocity impact performance by projectiles

Yuezhao Pang et al.

Summary: Fibre-metal laminates have been successfully applied in modern engineering industries due to their excellent impact resistance. A ballistic impact test was conducted on a basalt fibre/steel hybrid laminate to analyze the influence of lay-up structure, fibre volume fraction, laminated surface density, and laminate impact angle on ballistic impact performance. The results showed varying ballistic limit velocity values and specific energy absorption with different lay-up structures, as well as improved energy loss with penetration angle in oblique penetration experiments.

Experimental and numerical evaluation of the perforation resistance of multi-layered alumina/aramid fiber ballistic shield impacted by an armor piercing projectile

Riccardo Scazzosi et al.

Summary: The Multilayered Armor System combines a ceramic front layer and a ductile backing, designed using numerical models to reduce the workload of experimental testing, but requires expertise. The Finite Element method cannot accurately simulate ceramic fragmentation, leading to the development of a new model in this study that showed good results when validated against experimental data.

Comparing pyrometry and thermography in ballistic impact experiments

Connor Woodruff et al.

Summary: Thermal analyses were conducted on aluminum projectiles to investigate projectile impact and subsequent combustion using a high-velocity impact ignition system. Temperature measurements were compared using pyrometry and thermography, showing pyrometry is best for immediate temperature measurement while thermography quantifies temperature dissipation downstream. Three combustion stages were identified in the thermography data.

Impact damage modeling in woven composites with two-level Parametrically-Upscaled Continuum Damage Mechanics Models (PUCDM)

Xiaofan Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper develops two-level parametrically-upscaled continuum damage mechanics models for woven composites. The models are thermodynamically consistent and integrate micro-/mesostructure to bridge length scales. The coefficients are determined using machine learning algorithms operating on a response database. The models are validated using ballistic impact experiments with good agreement.

A modified model to predict the ballistic limit of a cubic fragment penetrating Kevlar / titanium fiber metal laminate

Zhiyuan Zhu et al.

Summary: Fiber-Metal laminate (FML) is widely used in marine, military, and aerospace fields for structural protection due to its lightweight and high strength. This study investigates the ballistic resistance of a bi-metal 2/1 FML and proposes a modified theoretical model based on energy dissipation to predict the ballistic limit and analyze energy absorption. The experimental data validates the effectiveness of the modified model.

Study on high velocity impact response of aramid fibers-epoxy/aluminum laminate composites toughened by ZrO2 and SiO2 nanoparticles

Mohammad Hossein Abedi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the improvement in high-velocity impact response of fiber metal laminates through modification of epoxy using SiO2 and ZrO2 nanoparticles. The modification of epoxy increased the specific energy absorption and changed the failure mechanism. Finite element simulation results agree well with experimental data.

Low-velocity impact on square sandwich plates with fibre-metal laminate face-sheets: Analytical and numerical research

Jianxun Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the low-velocity impact on clamped square sandwich plates composed of a metal foam core and fibre-metal laminate face-sheets using analytical and numerical methods. The impact behavior is formulated based on a modified rigid-plastic material approximation, with numerical simulations conducted and compared with analytical results. The influences of material parameters and impact location on dynamic behaviors are discussed in detail, providing an efficient and simple analytical method for predicting low-velocity impact on square FML sandwich plates.
